Miss Barton is still going, she is 103.

Comment by: RON HUNT on 16th December 2016 at 12:25

davey do you know where she lives? I would love to go and meet her. She would often go shopping in Marks and Spencers (where my mother worked), and she always asked my mother how I was getting on. About 15 years after I had left Highfield, and I had never seen Miss Barton since, I was working at Plessey's in South Shields for a few weeks. When Miss Barton next saw my mother she said " Do you know I was in South Shields last week visiting my sister and I saw someone who just looked like Ronald" My mother said "Well it would be him as he is working up there at the minute", Small World

Great photo i was wondering did Mr.Elliot ever go down to St.James, Poolstock Lane? Also some one was asking about one of the teachers , well how's this a couple of years back i traced down one of Highfild's Head Infant teacher she is MISS CHARNOCK and she was in a lovely housing project at top of UPHOLLAND round by a PUB that does dinning meals ( BRITTANNIA something ????) I took her a birthday present which overwhelmed her i think she was in her 90s? My reason was because she was the very first teacher that was at the gates at the bottom infants back in 1952/3 i will never forget that image because i was bawling my eyes out and my mam kind of pushed me towards her and went, very fond memories.

Looking at Miss Heaton's hairstyle, I would say this is early to mid sixties.

Comment by: RON HUNT on 16th December 2016 at 18:26

TOP Miss Barton was still there when I left in 1957 As she isn't on the photograph could she have retired and did Miss Heaton taken her place? as I can't remember her?

I remember them all very well. I attended St. Matthews from 1954-1961. Miss Barton taught my mum as well as me. Visited her in Upholland in the 70's. I became a primary school headteacher due to her encouragement. Does anyone know where she lives? Valerie Taylor.

Miss Charnock lived in Mitchell st Newtown for many years!

Miss Barton in the picture died a number of years ago. She was 82. It could be that it is Miss Charnock that you are thinking about. She has turned 100 and last I heard she was in a rest home in Upholland

I also think this is taken in the 60's judging by the clothes and hair styles and the apparent age of the people.
Between 1961 and 65 I attended Highfield Juniors and Classes 1,3,4 where taught by Mrs. Simm, Miss Barton and Mr Elliot respectively. Class 2 had various teachers and between '62 and '63, at least, no teacher at all. This was my class 2 year and part of the class was with Mrs. Simm and part with Miss. Barton. The Miss Heaton, in the photo, does resemble someone who would have been there in my last year.
Nice to see all these interesting pictures. A lot of them bring back good memories.

Judging by Miss Barton's outfit - same as photo on page 1 - it must be 1966. Miss Heaton took class 2 and later became Mrs. Morton, having married the son of the lady who ran Highfield Women's Fellowship for many years.

i am led to believe that miss Barton who lived in Mitchel st sadly passed away recently aged 105

Comment by: fred foster on 23rd January 2020 at 07:58

Eric, it was Miss Charnock who died aged 105. When she was 100 the Parish Church choir visited her in the rest home and sang for her. She was a cousin to my uncle Jim who also made it to 101. Bottom Miss Barton was my dad's cousin, but it did me no favours as I got the cane just like the rest of us!

I attended the infants and juniors from around 1967 onwards. I remember Mr Elliot and also a headmistress at the infants called Miss Waddington. She was lovely, as was the school itself. Happy times
