I remember this very well as I had just entered the 6th form. There was a kind of track on the lawn and it looked authentic. I have a suspicion that the staff knew quite well that it was a hoax and decided to go along with it. What a great idea-- no harm and a lot of fun.

Was the Daily Herald paraphrasing here? I can't imagine a Wiganer saying the headmaster was "a jolly good sport" but you never know.
