I believe it originated in America, Ron, and stands for Good As You.
The meaning of the word "gay" has been interpreted in different ways over they years. I believe in the 1930s it was informally associated with prostitution.

Never mind America in the 30s. It was in use in Victorian times, to say a woman was gay could mean that she had turned to prostitution!
Don't apologise about the quality it's the saving of such precious memories that's important.
I agree with you Ron the word Gay used to mean carefree or merry until it was hijacked by the homosexual community.
