I went to all saints 1961-67,Drainpipes in the classroom wre quite common and rooms very cold in winter.Remember Miss Lawton,Mrs Critchley and Miss Sidderley was headmistress. The school was in Banner St and is now Corbett Court for the elderly .Happy days John and geoff became good footballers.

I went to All Saints Church of England School school in Hindley from 1965 to 1968. It was a run down old building on the corner of Chapel Green Rd and Banner St opposite All Saints church. It was replaced by a new school around 1969 nearby on Chapel Fields Lane. My dad was the curate at the church so it was expected for me to go to the school. Mr Pennington was the headmaster, the Deputy Head was Mr Iddon a younger man with a booming voice. There weren't many teachers those days and certainly no teaching assistants. The only other teacher I remember is Miss Parker who looked after the first year class, she was quite scary, every morning we had to stand on our chairs and recite times tables while she prowled around with a ruler in hand listening for anyone making a mistake. This was followed by a similar exercise in spelling where she would shout out a word and we all had to spell it, if you made a mistake you got a whack on the legs with a ruler. There was a school secretary who shared a tiny office on the side of the stage with the headmaster. A caretaker who always seemed to be a nice man. I remember the curtains on the stage were all torn and the school was in very bad shape generally. It wasn't a particularly good school, some teachers tried hard but a couple of them were terrors. Corporal punishment was handed out quite liberally, serious cases were dealt with by the Headmaster who gave us the "slipper" in reality a size 10 plimsol, other teachers slapped legs or used a ruler. Except for Miss Parker tables and spelling drills I learnt very little although I can still spell "necessary" and "occasion" and do my 7 times table without thinking, so thank you Miss Parker!
