what happen to my certificates did mam only save yours
Sir Percy Lord came to Cardinal Newman school in 1967 to present the prizes on prize giving night.. I got one..A picture book of London..
By the crin Carol I can remember going on the coach to Atherton baths and passing various certificates. I bet Bill will even remember the drivers name.
I remember Atherton baths hade some black tiles in the shallow end. It looked like you were jumping into a black hole from the side..
I remember getting one of these at the old St Helens swimming baths, that was a very old pool. For some reason our primary school always went there though Wigan swimming pool was a lot closer.
Mary bet r sandy chewed it lol or you only did 24.5 yds and didn't get one. lol I remember when you took me to the old,old Wigan baths my first time (girls only) and you ducked me down and i could not swim!!! sisterly love or what lol
I often wondered why we went to Atherton when Wigan was nearer. At Rose Bridge School we did go to the newly built Wigan pool(knocked down now) we travelled on the bus, i can still see Miss Glover paying for about 34 half fares.
Did these mentioned swimming pools have a dual purpose. At weekends, in the evening, Wigan pool was covered, and became a dance floor.A great facility, and well patronized
you giv me bad name.i realy tried drown you then be more food for me at home.ha
That brings back some great memories Carol. I had one exactly the same around that year. My school was Belle Green, and we used to go by coach but to Leigh baths...no idea where my certificate is, cheers.
Thinking about it now, it was called a "Length" 25 yards, as most swimming pools was around that time.
Stephen, The coach driver's name was Mr Hough. I think he also took us to Westward Ho! and smoked Players' Weights cigs.
I have a certificate from the same month, Carol- June 66 which says ''Intermediate'' instead of Learner's. I'll get Granada to post it .
I would have typed this.I worked in the Education Office which issued these.Must have been a bit cockeyed when I did this - not exactly on line!
My god carol I still have one of these, I remember hanging on to the bit of polystyrene and hoping I wouldn't,t drown , 25 yards was a long way then. We went to Leigh baths by coach once a week from Ince central school . There was also a certificate for riding your bike. ( the cycling proficiency scheme) give them credit they may have saved a few lives with these incentives.
Hi Terry i can remember the cycling certificate, you had to ride down Ince Green Lane, i recall a boy out of my class Garry Wood winning it two years running.
I remember going to Leigh baths by coach when I went to Ince Central.I believe it was because Wigan baths (the really old one in Millgate) was always so busy, there was so many schools in Wigan then.
