I don't suppose there are many of these certificates to be found. My mum was born in May 1911 so would have been 14 yrs old when she left school. She married in 1934 and at the time she was a machinist at Fentons. Maybe she started there straight from school.

I have a similar thing for my great grandmother born 1883. She left school in the 1890's. It included the number of days she attended school in all her years of schooling. Quite a fascinating document. Yes it is falling apart but i treasure it much as it's what got me started in finding my past.

I have put 2 similar certificates on to Wigan World under Gilligan in Families. My father in law and mother in law both were born in 1908 and both left school at 13. This was the norm in those days. Boys were usually sent to the pits and girls to the cotton mills.
