I went to Easter Camp in 1950,51 and 52 at Grasmere.Seems the destinations didn't change much. We went to Helvellyn, Langdale Pikes, Fairfield and if it was wet to Tarn Howes Jack Sharratt and ,I think Jack Lowe were the teachers and we went on Walls coaches with Bert Walls as driver who was an Old Boy of H,A,G.S.We played the village team at football on Tuesday evening, can't remember the results but a fine time was had by all. Clarksons cafe was a favourite venue and for those who were interested a trip to Wordsworth's grave in the Churchyard and a visit to Dove Cottage were undertaken. Oh Happy Days!
I went on these Easter camps from '57 to '59 and by then Billie Thomlinson (Maths teacher) was also a chaperone (prison officer)- was my introduction to 'fell walking' and "foot blisters". Remember that some years it was a joint 'camp' with Leeds Grammar School and we all slept on straw palliasses in the corrodors of Grasmere village hall! Remember being on early morning 'sandwich (butty) making" duties - never have made so many butties in my life since!! Good old days - remember going by Walls coach - before the M6 even!
Anyone remember me organising the burning of the palliasse straw-must have been 1958-just before farmer turned up to collect it? jack Sharratt went mad!
