Too late for my generation but the 'big room' was where we had assembly and where the PTA (your other photo John) held dances and fancy dress events. I haved trapped my fingers a few times sliding back that screen back to make the room into the 'big room'. The room on the other side of the screen was Miss Holt's class where we did 'real writing' when we went up to her class. She later married one of the Sherrington's (bothers Norman and Tom had hardware shops in Whelley end of Scholes and Scholefield Lane)

Derek, I think tthe photograph included more than one class. Remember Sherrington's hardware shop in Scholes well I lived in Scholes (Golborne ST and Scholefield Lane until I was 14 then move to Wright St Whelley next door to the petrol station until 1967 the moved to Beech Hill. Remember petrol at 5s a gallon then. That's just over 1s a litre! How times have changed.

I am sure that there are two classes here. I think that I am number 7 on the fourth row and number 9 is June Tomlinson

Theres definitely a mix up with the names. I attended St Stephens till 1962 and some of my classmates names are on the list but our year is definitely not in the picture.

Now I've looked more closely at the picture I am positive that Terry Grindley, Brian Perry and Blodwyn As all are NOT in this photo. They were in my year which is at least one below this. Like Linda I think there are two classes here. I used to play with Linda when I went to my gran's house which was on Whelley at the corner of Beaconsfield Street. I lived at 84 Whelley. Memories eh!!!!

To put D Stephens right - this is a mixed class of two different years, I am on the picture next to Arthur Winstanley. Terence Grindley, Brian Perry and other fellow classmates such as David McCoombs are also there. I know it is two different classes because my sister Vivian who is a year older than myself is also pictured here

Hi Steve. Look very closely. I don't think our year is in this photo. Where are Keith Whalley, Iggy Green, Ron Berry, myself, Mick Kenny to name but a few.

Hi again Dave,

I can point out a couple more names you thought were missing from picture.

Michael Kenny is fourth from right on next to back line.

Ronald Berry is on same row fifth from right.

A few more I can name are back row: Geoffrey Dickinson top left.

next row down: Michael Jolley, first left, John Roscoe, third from left, myself, next to John, Alfred Leyland next to Lester Atherton and David McCoombs far right, same row.

The remainder (not named) I cannot remember but Keith Whalley, Ian Green and yourself for whatever reason are not on picture.

Steve
You've nailed it. But it is a mystery why the three of us are missing. I remember that there were only three classes for the four junior years so this would have been our third year. By my reckoning that would have put us 10 years old. So 1960/61 school year???

Comment by: Dave Stephens on 14th November 2016 at 20:37

I must have been camera shy because there is a school photo from 1965 on the Wigan Grammar School page and I'm not on that either. I did have a nasty accident around 1960 time and was 'off school quite a while.

Steve Lowe has named many, there are a couple more. Lad third from left on back row I think is Roy Sherrington. Lad stood on his own on left of third row is Clifton Bayliss and the girl between Joyce Weller and Anne McG is Marjorie Ollerton. As the other lads have said, there are quite a few faces missing from the class in this photo e.g. George Leech. Good memories though (not sure about Mrs Brunton!)

Sad news for all our friends that new him. Ian Green, (Iggy), former pupil of our year at St Stephens, who lived until recently at Ephraims Fold, Aspull, sadly passed away recently. He will be sadly missed by all his old pals

Sad news indeed about Iggy. Not only was he a classmate of mine at St Stephens but all through the Wigan Grammar/Thomas Linacre classes till 1967 when he left.

No. 4 in the row sitting on chairs is my sister, Christine Holme (18 months older than I am). If that is Maureen Forshaw to her left, presumably she has a younger sister named Kathleen who was in my class when I started at St Stephen's.
Graham Hunt (no. 4 in the front row) is our stepbrother (four years older than me).
