St. Mark's school originated in a small schoolhouse which was built in 1868 at the corner of Victoria Street and Stanley Street, by Mr Brandreth, who occupied one portion as a dwelling, and used the other part as a school. Old scholars of Mr Brandreth remembered a pair of cockatoos which caused endless amusement whilst the children were at lessons. After Mr Brandreth's return to Australia, St. John's Pemberton took over the building to establish a church school. The foundation stone of the schools in the picture were laid in 1872, an they were opened on New Year's Day 1873, with Mr. Clement Carr as the first headmaster.

Hi Ken (Just)....I also left in 1948, was in Mr Pennington's class but I remember you. I answered to my Sunday best name of Robert in those days. I am Ken Parkinson's cousin. I still live in Newtown..

Just stumbled across this website while trying to track down more information about one of my ancestors.
I have a clock presented to my great-grandfather, Clement Carr, in 1878 by "Teachers, Scholars and Friends of Bridgewater Church School, Newtown nr Wigan in recognition of his valuable service over a number of years".
He seems to have moved to Harrogate around 1878 but died in 1881, aged 45, shortly before his son, also Clement, was born.
The clock still keeps good time!

I went to St Marks infants & juniors 1962-69. Still in the old school at the front….the Girls Senior School at the back (now the main school building) was still operating during most of my time there but it finished circa 1967 ?? When all the Senior Girls went to Pemberton Girls. The wonderful Miss Lowe taught me in Junior 2 and the ‘character’ that was Isaac Pennington in Junior 3 …Eric Bradbury was Headmaster and taught me in both 1st and 4th years ….Miss Lowe and Mr Carruthers both retired before I left. Infant school teachers were Mrs Steele, Miss Mawson and Mrs Telford (Head). The original infants and Juniors building at the front was demolished in the early/mid 70’s
