The school had separate boys and girls sections up to Aug 1969 when the school first combined the sexes. As you look at the school from Manchester Road, the boys school was to the left of the main entrance and the girls to the right. There were two assembly halls which the boys and girls would share on a week by week basis. The boys teachers staff room was at the front of the school whilst the girls teachers staff room was at the rear. Each section had its own Headmaster (Mr Winstanley) and Headmistress (Mrs Holmes) when I was there in the 60's. Although each school did have its own playground, the pupils did mix at break / lunch times in a common playground at the rear of the (new) assembly hall
john every thing you said right i know because i was there to
I must have started at Rose Bridge in 1968 when Mrs Church was the headmistress over the girls side. I think the girls quad had a weather William in the centre and the boys had a fish pond.....but it could have been the other way round! The toilets were in a block outside when I started and we thought it was real luxury when new indoor toiles were built. Assembly in the old hall was lovely and when the choir sang the acoustics were amazing. We had our dinner in the old hall. Big metal containers came in vans from the kitchens down Ince Green Lane and were unloaded in the kitchen at the front of the school and dished out by 'servers' at the tables. I can still see it now !!
