even though I was some 13 years later , both Teddy Johnson and Pop Denning, in the picture standing L-R 1st and 3rd, were still there in 1953

Hi Jack, don't forget Dickie Nutt.

Comment by: Ashley on 18th January 2010 at 09:34

I was taught by all three, I remember "Pop" telling us he was gassed in WW1, perhaps this accounted for his occasional "erratic" behaviour.

Comment by: Frank Healy on 18th January 2010 at 13:22

Hi Ashley, I'd love to know what you mean by "his occasional erratic behaviour" :o) :o) :o)

I notice in the middle of the back row are Alderman Farr and Mr Hopwood Sayer the solicitor

Comment by: Ashley on 18th January 2010 at 23:48

Hi Frank, if you were taught by him you'll know what I mean. If not get in touch. One sure way of getting a much more interesting English lesson was to get him talking about his beloved bees.

This reminds me of the scene in Goodbye Mr. Chips where the masters are waiting to meet the new Mrs. Chips.

Hi Ashley, if memory serves me correctly another way was to mention the "black death". He actually taught us 1st year Latin; fortunately, I then had a choice between Woodwork and Latin so it was good-bye to sum, es, est..... :o)

Comment by: Ashley on 23rd January 2010 at 18:15

Hi Frank, perhaps you were fortunate, we had JAB (Bullough) for Latin, dull as ditchwater, only too pleased when I was able to drop it. Talking about eccentric behaviour, Shepherd (Chemistry) had his moments.

Comment by: Bloo on 24th January 2010 at 11:44

Dont speak of the devil Jas - you just might meet him!

Comment by: Frank Healy on 27th January 2010 at 13:50

Hi Ashley, I know what you mean about Shepherd and "eccentric behaviour". Fortunately (again), he knew my paternal grandparents very well so that was always a saving grace.

You crawling git Healey.

I take it this was in the Town Hall and the non WGS masters are Governors.I can recognise only Alderman Harry Farr & J Hopwood Sayer the Borough Coroner, the clergyman is probably the then Rector of Wigan

The Headmaster Mr Taylor during the second world war was my neighbour at Sicklefield House and his daughter Janet was my little friend. Does anybody know what happened to the family when they moved on. Thank you
