This Nursery sports day photograph shows the back of the 'little school' as it was always known locally.
It was opened in 1910 and, with a small extension added on the corner of Kirkless Street and Ash Lane (which became part of the nursery) so it continued until 1995.
It was decided to amalgamate the school with the juniors on Wigan Road and we then became St.John the Baptist Church of England Infant and Junior School as from September 1995.
After several years the powers-that-be decided that a bigger school should be built, which would replace St. John's and St Stephen's and so both schools closed in July 2004.
The completion of the new building was delayed through unusually wet weather, so from September to December 2004 we stayed in our building as part of Canon Sharples Church of England Junior and Infant School and Nursery, (the rest of the children were in St. Stephen's)and eventually moved into the new building in January 2005.
It was sad to see the building fall into disrepair and eventually to see its demolition.
New houses have now been built on the site.

I loved this school!...Mrs Bolton was my favourite teacher, I think she still does abit of work at the new school.

I remember when the 'shed/garage' bit shown at the front in this picture caught fire, we were all sat on the carpet listening to a story when Dean Topping spotted the smoke coming from the building....the teacher would'nt believe him and told him to be quiet.

Then it dawned....2 or three fire engines later......

Thanks for the compliment Gareth, we did have some good times didn't we?
It's good to hear your memory of THE FIRE.
I seem to remember it was about 3 o'clock and it was
story-time in the nursery too. I thought "What a stupid time to have a fire drill....and why didn't they tell us".
Shame the building has gone but they can't take our memories away.
Speaking of memory, for some reason I can picture your coat peg being about the 7th or 8th along on the left as you came in from outside. However it's not always reliable!

I did'nt realise it was THE Mrs Bolton posting...
Yep, the best teacher I ever had...always asked you for the toilet I we knew you always said 'yes'...Mrs Price (I think) was the one who always said 'no' and Mrs Sandland was a 'yes'/'no'...you had to run the risk if Mrs Bolton was'nt around!

My peg location?..not a clue!...glad you remember me!

I live very near the new housing estate now...and tell my children the best school with the best teachers was there!

Mmmmm....I think that sometimes I was a bit mean and said
"You'll have to wait until Suchabody comes back"
to prevent anyone having any fun,(eg. climbing on toilet seats or running gallons of water in the sinks) away from adult eyes,
but you only needed to ask during story time, any other time you would just go.
Happy days!

Many a great day playing on the old wooden frames (Splinters) and the concrete tunnels (Scraped Knees)
