James Carlton, of the Eckersley family, continued to upgrade the school over many years to ensure the welfare & education of the Hindley people. He died in 1926.

When I was a pupil at Park High in the first half of the 1980s, the original cornerstone was kept in the library in a wooden and glass case. It bore the inscription
'This school was built by the kind ghyfte of Ms Marie Abram, widow of this parish, whose soul I trust tryumpeth now amongst the just, Anno Dominae 1632'

Don't quote me on the exact wording, but I think that was it. I wonder where the stone is now?

I believe that the stone was collected by the council and put into their archive during the summer of 2013 when the building was being refurbished as a pupil referral unit. They also collected a large wooden chair.
