The Mayor and Mayoress in the photograph are James and Lilian Bridge... which dates the photograph to 1981/82. I believe they were the last incumbents under the old Wigan County Borough. They are being presented with a cheque for the Mayor's Charity.

I never went to the school, but I thought a few of you may be interested, I am sure a few of those little faces are still about. Sorry about the gutter running down the middle.

No comments? Where the devil is everyone? I attended Hindley Green CPS in the long-back. Born in 1935 and could not wait to go to school. Must have been four years old when I was taken by older girls to look through the "Infants" window and see the spotted rocking horse with the silver mane. Pestered till my mother lost patience and dragged me up there one washing-day morning to get the Head, Miss Darwen, to tell me I was too young to go there. Miss Darwen, God bless her, said she had some lee-way and did not like to turn away a keen child. So I was admitted, under age! And Miss Darwen, Miss Baxendale, and Mrs Smith (a total dragon) served me well and got me to Hindley & Abram Grammar School, which also served me well.

We were so lucky in those days....even though I got "jocked off" the rocking horse after one ride - for dangerous riding! Anyone still alive who remembers me?

yes I went to this school and remember Miss Darwin Miss Baxendale and the dreaded Miss Smith (now my married name is Smith but not related. Although we all feared her is got us through our 11+ Note that all the teachers at that time were single. Long time ago and now I am 80 so perhaps I am the only one left I hope not.

Does anyone have any information on when the school was originally built? I attended in the 1990s and was recently saddened to see that it has been demolished for yet more houses. It would be great to find out more about when it was originally constructed.

Looking on google you would be forgiven for thinking that the school never existed; its almost like it has been erased

Yes i went there and left in '97. Mrs bray was headteacher at the time followed by mr wilson. Had a good time there. Used to love sneaking up on the balcony high above the main assembly/dinner hall. And could swear art room at bottom of the corridor was haunted!
