Hi Tom are you any relation to Mary and Lbert Howarth (both now deceased)

Comment by: jm on 7th October 2008 at 20:11

Hi Tom
my great grandmother was Alice Howarth from Ince, her father was James,do you think there could be a connection?

Comment by: pfrost on 7th October 2008 at 22:36

where was the picture taken Tom?

Comment by: Catherine on 8th October 2008 at 01:19

What's the name of the street in the background? I can't quite make it out.

Comment by: aitch on 8th October 2008 at 12:12

the picture was taken on Manchester Road looking towards Rose Bridg, you can just make out the Imperial pub on the top left, the sign says Old Square I think, but it doesnt ring any bells with me, you can also just make out Woodcocks shop, that is on the corner of Hall street the next street down was Grant street, and then Careless Lane.

Comment by: irene on 8th October 2008 at 14:14

I was born in Ince, albeit in 1952, and I don't recall Old Sqare, and it isn't on the Ince electoral roll from @ 1925, although Careless Lane and Grant Street ARE...a mystery! would Bill Gaskell be the same person who had the electrical shop on the corner of Belle Green Lane arund the 50's and 60's?

Comment by: irene on 8th October 2008 at 14:30

p.s. there is a PINFOLD SQUARE on the 1925 electoral roll but it is up around where Varty's is now, near Branch Street. is it possible photo was taken there and part of sign is missing? come on, Tom, solve the puzzle for us! Hello to all Incers, wherever you are today!

Comment by: Jm on 8th October 2008 at 15:49

Hi Tom
do you know what year this photo was taken, the street name had proberbly changed before the 1925 street list.
Hi to Irene i did have a look myself and could not find Old Square.

Comment by: pfrost on 8th October 2008 at 17:39

if thats pinfold square, which is very likely
then the pub harold would be the fox tavern, as is on this picture.

Comment by: jm on 8th October 2008 at 18:27

could be right about Pinfold Square
I do belive in the past the church walks used to go back to Walmsley Park {Ince park}to have their refreshments, perhaps thats where they were going and passing Pinfold Square?

Comment by: Stephen on 8th October 2008 at 19:25

I've lost mi bearings now. Where was Pinfold Sq in relation to Ince bar, lets say the White House and was this photo looking towards Rose Bridge or Hindley

Comment by: Keith Bowen on 8th October 2008 at 19:55

On the 1907 Ordnance Survey map for Wigan, Pinfold Square is shown and there is a gap (or square) before you meet Pinfold Street, followed by a public house, then Darlington Street, after you cross the Springs Branch L & NWR railway lines the next are, Branch Street, Brown Street, Clarence Street and the map finishes after it shows Moat House Street.
It would appear to me that if the old square is Pinfold Square then the photograph would have been taken across the road near Jackson Street.

Comment by: aitch on 8th October 2008 at 22:15

you are probably right about it being Pinfold square, and the pub just after it before Darlington street would be the Crown.

Comment by: aitch on 8th October 2008 at 22:19

[/img]have a look at this and see if you can zero in to the bar.

Comment by: Jm on 9th October 2008 at 10:00

Pinfold Square was next to Darlington St But those confused as to where it was Keith means LITTLE? Darlington St,{AS THE INCERS USED TO CALL IT}so as not to get confused with Darlington St in wigan
Little Darlington St was off Manchester Rd Higher Ince.
My mother was born in that street

Comment by: irene roberts on 9th October 2008 at 12:51

hi to p. frost... a query from a friend of mine ,Neil Cain whose grandad had Cains cake shop in belle green lane...are you related to Jack Frost who emigrated to America @ the 1st world war?

Comment by: aitch on 9th October 2008 at 20:39

after Pinfold square there was a advertising hoarding, then a street, then the Crown, then Little Darlington street, but it really was called just Darlington street, it was only the locals who called it little Darlington street, I lived in the street in the late 60s moving from there to Brown Street, and finally to Platt Bridge after they condemned the properties, I lived there for 6 weeks, couldn't wait to get back up Ince.

Comment by: Evelyn on 9th October 2008 at 23:11

This is Pinfold Square and the next street was Pinfold Street which was directly opposite Jackson Street where we used to turn into to get to the recreation ground ( known locally as The Rec)where we ended our walking day. Then we were given our well earned bottle of pop and crisps.

Comment by: pfrost on 9th October 2008 at 23:14

Hi sorry I have not answer your queries sooneritsdughters computer and she put the photo on for me you are correct in saying it was Pinfold square it was just past ince bar going towards the railway crossing. The photo was taken in approx 1950 as i appear to be about 13yrs old in the photo. In response to the query my mother was named Mary but my Father was Thomas. I did have an Uncle Albert who was my dads brother and I am not sure what his wife was called. I do remember that my Grandmother was named Eliza Howarth but they lived in Every Steet in Wigan. I will have a look to see if I have anymore old photo,s

Comment by: Cadfael on 24th January 2009 at 07:00

... I will also moot the idea that the photograph was taken on Belle Green Lane, and it it is the large advert that tells me this.

Comment by: jm on 19th November 2010 at 18:29

Tom dont know if you will see this after such a long time but i think we may be of the same Howarths,my grandmother who mother was Alice Howarth.
My grandmother used to talk about her aunt Eliza who used to go and sit in the chair in her house and fall asleep for hours when she was in her late years.Iwonder if your grandmother was married to Alice brother, who was Elizas husband?
