Standish Walking Days

I worked at Richardson's Chemists, (which was at 81, High Street, opposite The Globe Pub), when this photo was taken, and the man holding the mace would just have been passing the door. I worked on Saturdays so Mr. Richardson and I may well have been standing in the shop doorway if this was a Saturday, watching the procession. I wish I could remember.
Hard to make out but that's probably Bernard Derbyshire leading the front .
Irene, this was a Sunday but according to the diary of Fathers the previous day had the church walks (separate?). As a bye you possibly would have served Father when he came in for my mums scripts as she was unable to collect them herself.
Thankyou Barrie. I would like to think I served your Father with your Mum's prescriptions. I remember some customer's names even after 50 years and remember being sent out to various addresses with tablets when we didn't have enough to fill the prescriptions until our delivery arrived! No wonder I weighed very little, aged 18-20, on those "penny scales" outside the Chemists' door, with all the running around I did!
Standish walking day at this time lasted over the entire weekend .
St .Wilf's walked alone on Saturday ; the day then repeated with St .Marie's joining in on Sunday . Irene , you could have watched the procession on both Sat & Sunday .
It does look like Bernard poet, he'd have been doing the honours around this time. The tree near the cenotaph has grown massively from the previous shot, now long gone, the row of terraced also gone. No pint in th Black Horse this time :)
You can make out the bus shelter now moved back to where the terrace was . The chippy was Chippy John's and before that Frank Morgans . ( It was Frank's funeral yesterday) a great Standish man .
Looking up Church St you see the porch and black door of the Legion .
I see Chippy John out walking his dog occasionally, he seems to be doing well. I didn't know about Frank, he'll be sorely missed, especially at Wigan RUFC where he was a legend.
I to am certain it's Bernard Derbyshire leading, I often used Richardson's Chemist at this time when Grandma Woods was very poorly. Standish was a great place back then, sadly walking days are few and far between these days. Nice photo.
