When St Mark's, Newtown is mentioned, it always reminds of a coincidental occurrence, that happened quite a few years ago. In the early 60s I was a policeman at Newtown Police Station. In mid July 1964 I transferred to the Kent Police,. One morning, about 1.30 A. M. in the mid 1970s, I was on mobile patrol, on a road, by the side of the Borstal Young Offenders Institute, Rochester. I saw a man walking his dog.On questioning him, he told me he was the Padre at the Borstal. We had a chat.It turned out we had something in common. During the early to late 60s he was the curate at St Mark's,Newtown , Wigan. So at one time we worked just two, to three hundred yards apart. After a cheerful cheerio, we went our different ways. Our paths never crossed again. He didn't give me his name.

Thanks for your comment Albert. I suspect that the curate your mention was the Reverend Arthur R. B. Robinson, curate at St Mark's, Newtown 1958-1961. I will post a photo of him on the Wigan World album.

Michael. I only policed Newtown early 1962, until July 1964, prior to that I was at central police Station, King Street. I recollect him saying he was at St Mark's, early sixties, to late sixties. After all this time, I doubt if I would recognize a photograph of him. It was only a casual meeting, and it was very early in the morning.

Thanks for mentioning Eric Grundy Vivien. I do remember Eric from St. Mark’s. They were happy days, and the walking days were always blessed with good weather!

Does anyone remember my grandad John Sockett who was a sergeant at Newtown police station?
