St Catharine's church Scholes walking day in the 1950s or very early 1960s. Lower Morris St off Scholes can be seen but can you name the shops? Peter Winstanley is walking next to the banner carrier but can you recognise anyone else? The little girl second from the left with the ribbon in her hair looks a bit like Beryl Dainty but not sure.

I lived in Lower Morris Street as a child. I think the first shop when you turned right into Scholes at the top of the street was a chemist's shop called Knight's. There was a butcher's (Marsden's??), too. I'm not sure whether it was the next shop or the one after.

The shop next to Knight's Chemist was Adams Store ,hardware and fancy goods ,the manageress traveled every day from Southport ,next door I think was Ida Northcliffe ,ladies foundation garments and underwear ,
Next I think was The Fent Shop, lower down was Marsdens Butchers ,run by a lady in my time Doris. Smailes Butcher was much higher up Scholes roughly opposite The Harp Inn.

The shop next to Knights chemists was Peets Butchers. a small shop. The shop with the Dunlop sign was Millers . it was sold to Millers in 1950 by my parents. The small chap is Peter Winstanley who I knew well. He had spent a number of years as a P.O.W in Germany in the war.

Watchalot, The Harp was on the corner of Vauxhall Road, as your rightly say Smailes was opposite ,but this picture is much lower down Scholes, opposite Union Street ,which in turn was lower down than Wellington Street. Did Winnie still work at Smailes in your time? I remember going there every week with my Mother I the 1950s. Regards Tom.

Gary, the chap you refer to is Peter Winstanley from Spring St when married to Edith. Peter passed away about three years ago. I know Jack Goulding and he isn't on this photo. I think Jack has moved down south now.
