It's hard to believe, now, how many shops and houses there were along Manchester Road.

There's even a petrol station on this photo. Just above the chaps hat on the right of the photo you can make out the "National" sign. Incers of a certain age like me will remember the lady that used to have the little shop and also served petrol from the corner..

Two bob to do your washing at the bag wash..that's our doctors surgery on the opposite corner. doctor oldfield and doctor Simmons were in there. They also went doctoring in new springs on certain days of the week

i remember Ria, the lady with the petrol pumps, my dad took me with him to buy parts for my bike, i can smell oil when i think of the shop

I'm the girl on the far right of this photo I think, I remember that dress it was a blue batiste embroidered fabric, I loved it.
