Any chance that Cain's/Ashurt's pie-shop might be on the cine-film, dk? My friend Neil would be thrilled if so. His grandad owned the shop, and a few photos have appeared taken very near to it, but none actually showing the shop. It would be wonderful just to have a glimpse of it.
Sorry Irene. It's not on. Damnation! It was my favourite shop as well. No-one makes prater pies like they used to. All that juice! Thin pastry! They'd tek the skin off roof o'yer mouth. People would be queued round to Ince Bar causing the LUT bus to stop and they were waiting for a pie nor a bus.
Irene, I think I've come as close as you can without actually showing Ashursts. I've posted a photo of me and My sister outside my Grans which was next door to Ashursts.
I would also love to see a photo and have asked my old school friend Rodney Ashurst if he (or his sisters) have any.
I will obviously post them if any are forthcoming
dk, these photo's are wonderful
Stephen I remember you saying you would ask Rodney, but I don't think there are any photos in existence unless it crops up on a walking-day photo sometime. Neil is in regular contact with Valerie, Rodney's sister. Such a shame! Your photo was so near yet so far!
Thanks to everyone who has tried to find a photo of the shop, guess we are just out of luck. Glad you enjoyed the pies dk.
Irene, to rub salt into the wounds I also have a photo of my Grandad (and friend) stood on the back step of their house next door to Ashursts.
I have realised that these bw pics are from the same walking day as earlier colour ones. It's all the same kids. My apologies, I didn't mean to repeat them.
How about a photo of a prater pie if there isn't one of the shop? I'd settle for that!
Irene/Neil, there is a photo on Album> Assorted> 1st Wigan Boys Brigade, Ince, that has a view of the bottom of Bell Green Lane. You can probably just make out the shop.
Maybe the person that put these photo's on may have some of the Brigade passing the shop.
Which photo, Stephen? The one showing the brigade turning into Belle Green Lane shows the shops on Ince Bar, but not in Belle Green Lane, or did you mean one of the photos taken in Queensway?
It's the 2nd photo on the first page. It has the Engine in the background. You can just about see Ashurst. You can also see the Bug
