The young girl nearest the camera, holding the ribbon is Rosalie Murphy, she's probably practising for future years to keep me on a short leash!
The young woman directly behind my wife is her sister Eileen.
This one gave rise to an interesting discussion about who was married to whom... and then to whom.... The place, though, was the corner of Walmesley Street. The flagpole of St Mary's is just visible above the end house on the far left. The older girl walking opposite Eileen looks like Margaret MacDonald, nee Hill.
It also came out that your father used to do haircuts and shaving - including pre-op shaves - at the Infirmary.
Reverend. Thanks for the info about Walmsley St.
Sorry for the confusion about who's married to who, thats my wife nearest the camera.
The info about my dad being the pre-op barber is wrong, my dad was a miner.
Thanks for posting these photos Cliff., I am an old family friend of Rosalie. My mum and dad were friends of Jess and Ethel Roberts, Ethel was Rosalies Auntie. I posted a photo on assorted under Walker Bros/ Walmsleys Childrens Party which has me on it and her brother Stephen it will help her to remember who I am. All the best.
OOOPS! Sorry, Cliff! As John Daniel had sent so many pics of St Mary's Walking Day and Spring View in recent days, I assumed it was he who'd sent this one... I didn't notice the name change on the heading. It was his father, the barber, who also did duty at the Infirmary.
Hello Carl. Just shown Rosalie the photo of Walmsleys party, she says she remembers you.
The grocer's shop in the photo was probably started by George Walters. Our Registers show his son Walter was married from there (315 Warrington Road) on February 1st 1893. When St Mary's church was pulled down in 1978 a box of glass slides was salvaged. They were taken by Matthew Walters, and one is of the inside of the shop over a hundred years ago. You'll find my scans of the slides in the Old Gallery:

I remember Walterses shop, and on the opposite corner was my great Aunts shop, Kitty Harrisons hardware shop, and across the main road on the corner of Shed St was a little toffee shop called little Moe's. The pre op barber was Billy Daniels, and he had a barbers shop in Spring View facing the post office, in the same row as the post office was Turtons sweet shop, and a paper shop run by a family called Molineux, and then further up on the corner of Marlborough Ave was a small grocers which eventually became a second hand shop, and on the opposite corner was Alf Taylors drapers shop.

Hi Jimmy, I’m Alf Berry’s granddaughter, is this the shop he took over in this picture? I’ll show him the picture. How are you related? Are you on his maternal grandmothers side? Her name was Harriet Edwards.
