What does EW? stand for on the wall of the house?
Is it Emergency Water station ?
I think as you drive into Hindley from Wigan you can still it written on one wall on the left.

EWS was painted up during WW2 to indicate to fire men where there was an EMERGENCY WATER SUPPLY. in this case Borsdane Brook,Hindley. E.T.
