A SUPERB POSTCARD DATED 1906.. I THINK IT'S OPPOSITE THE ABBEY LAKES PUB?
LOOKS LIKE A HARRY PARKES PHOTOGRAPH?

Correct re the location Ron.
Dean Brook House which is still there, can be seen behind the tram car.
It does look like one of Harry Parkes's pics, but if he was the photographer, would he not have given the location as Orrell?
The photographer's comment on the photo says UpHolland, but Harry Parkes only lived a couple of hundred yards up the road, and would have known the terminus was actually just inside Orrell - only a few yards from its border with UpHolland.

Incredible photograph and with such clarity, I can almost hear it trundling down Ormskirk Road.
They used to say that there was a dentist at the bottom of Scholes who waited for the tram to go past Before extracting a tooth. Ouch!

l think my mother told me that story as well Colin, but l don’t think she used that particular dentist when she had all her teeth removed aged 28! That was in 1947, I can still see her sitting at the kitchen table, head bowed, whilst holding a handkerchief to her mouth.

My mother did the same Keith I don’t remember her with her own teeth.
They did it to prevent pain later on or it was something to do with their gums. It was free on the NHS I suppose that helped as well.

I've heard that back in the good old days people would have all their teeth out, for a 21st birthday present..

I knew somebody who lived in this vicinity at the time of the trams and she once told me that they gave their address as Up Holland though it is indeed just inside the border with Orrell. Probably because this are would have been closer to Up Holland village post office. Conversely Tontine, which is and always has been in Up Holland has the postal address of Orrell, because it was closer to the Orrell post office at Far Moor.
