These women were like another species to Munby. He was so fascinated with them that he married a servant. She was like a slave to him but when they went abroad she acted like a ‘lady’. I don’t think the ‘Wokes’ would be happy with the watercolour sketch either. She looks as if she is being interviewed for the Black and White Minstrels. He was definitely an odd man. He revelled in having his photograph taken with hardworking and rough looking women. Would he get away with it these days?.!

Veronica, he reminds me of "Mr. Teddy" in "You Rang, M'Lord?" who had a "thing" for servant girls with their "rough hands and shiny scrubbed faces" rather than the posh ladies he was expected to marry!

John is correct. Especially so back in the days of local collieries, Ince was independent of Wigan, with it's own council and it's own members of parliament.

Being 'woke' (ie thinking of others as you'd like them to think about you), sort of goes with the territory for me and other folk of faith, Veronica, but I can't see anything in this (apart from the condescension of Mr Munby towards Wigan lasses) which would get me going. She's plainly not 'blacked up' - it's as the artist saw her fresh from the pit.
Bruce - I'll never forget my shame, soon after I arrived at St Mary's, when I asked an Incer how long he'd lived in Wigan.... He told me! Ignorance is not always bliss.

Reverend David. The mines Act of 1836 banned women from working in the mines - AJ Mumby was born in 1828. It would be unlikely he would have come across a female working down the mine. Unless they smuggled themselves down there. A Pit Brow Lass definitely, but I don’t think they would be as black as his drawing portrays. He was a photographer as you probably know, and the women he took photographs of looked clean and probably photographed before their work commenced. Just a thought.

Poet exactly what I've been saying for months... AND I know for a fact that they get preferential Dental treatment and probably medical treatment as well. This is TRUE A few months ago a friend was in the waiting room at the dentist in Standishgate, opposite St Mary's church . A taxi driver brought in two Immigrants a man and a woman it appeared that the dentist was expecting them. He( dentist) said to the man that he would see his wife asap It appears she had tooth ache. The man told the Dentist that his wife must see a female dentist and no way would he allow her she see a male dentist. The dentist told him that there were no female dentists in the practice. The man gave the dentist a paper and told him to ring the number on the paper The dentist did so and explained to the person on the phone. that there were no female dentists in the practice. He then told the man that a taxi would come in 10 minutes and take him to a dentist that had a female dentist. Yet only last week on the news there were BRITISH people saying how they have had to take their own teeth out because they couldn't see a dentist...

No wonder the country is in the state it’s in. You can bet they get appointments at the doctors too without having to face a barrage of receptionists wanting to know what you need to see a doctor for.
I tried on two mornings last week and could not get through by phone. I ended up walking half a mile at 7 30 in the morning to get an appointment to have my leg seen to after an accident. No walk in centre in W/H but plenty cafes and the Town Hall now being put up to have another restaurant. No banks all turned into restaurants!

Veronica , in the Britannia hotel they have their own surgery . No need for an appointment. Just pop in .

As for the other comments - it's not the fault of migrants that we have such a run-down health service. Seems like a case of 'kick the cat' - just what the Government wants you to do - instead of attacking them, the cause.

Reverend , we know the NHS is in a mess . It's the preferential treatment given to people who haven't paid in a penny that I find profoundly unfair .

And a rather flippant remark regarding the ' Albanian tourists ' . No wonder the churches are empty .

Rev. We know it's the government's fault that the NHS is in such a state. But why do "these people" get preferential treatment above the British people? I think is the point being made.

When you walk through Wigan all you see is those strapping men lolling about and talking on their smart phones. It’s one long holiday for them not the best holiday resort but beats hard work! The British are well known for helping the worse off from other countries but it’s time something was done to stop them coming in illegally without obstructions from the do gooders who can’t see further than their noses. They even get to travel on the buses free. They are often found asleep with their heads on the seat in front!

How many times does it have to be said - they're not allowed to work.
You're letting the Government get away with shoddy services for everyone, and a useless immigration service. If we'd had a fair asylum system in the first place we'd not have encouraged the trafficking gangs to get a foothold.
As for 'preferential' treatment - how do you organise humane services for people who can be moved around without notice?

Rev you hit then nail on the head A FAIR ASYLUM SYSTEM Anyone arriving here and not proving that they have come from a war torn country Should be turned around at the border. You won't get into America or Australia, to name just two countries, without the relevant paperwork. i.e. Visas or a Passport. If they arrive on a dinghy. or the back of a lorry They should be sent back to the last country they left. be it France Belgium Holland. Do this country honestly think that the Mayor of Calais or wherever, is going to help in stopping the people leaving??? He will be supplying the dinghy's. I have nothing against admitting proper "ASYLUM SEEKERS" but not the Riff Raff that are coming in i.e. the SOCIAL MIGRANTS.

O we are obliged to give them jobs as well are we ? With 4000 a week coming now I'm not sure where these will come from .

All the public can see is that this country is on its knees with more problems of it’s own without the added numbers coming to these shores in thousands. It cannot go on sustaining the numbers coming here illegally. How many hotels have been turned into Asylum Centres? A country this size has already worked miracles in helping those that have arrived. I think Britain has done more than enough up to now.

Talking to a lady from Holland she worked for EU she said it's same in south Holland she been to inspect the migrants camps said it was very frightening they are ruled by gangs of traffickers they take every thing off the migrants and threaten them with there lives ,they are to blame making money out of human suffering government knows what's happening need to stop it
