Wigan Council hang your heads in shame...
Thanks to Trevor Smith( Smith's Book Shop) for the photograph.
This is a very sad time, my Wigan town demolished and for what, a shopping centre no one likes.
Why why oh why..I could cry looking at that scene...all gone and what for..an artless arcade.
Rip my soul rip my heart , burn then both all apart ,for within my memory you cannot touch the place I knew once here...
The Ritz Cinema in its hey day as one big cinema was admired far and wide for its excellent stereo system, and superb acoustics, the beautiful interior being ruined in the 1980s with the introduction of the Unit 4 Cinema.
Remember as kids on many a occasion we would go in there for an afternoon matinee and it would be a bright afternoon or blazing sunshine, but on coming out we'd have to walk home as the buses had stopped running due to thick fog.
I used to love going to the Ritz, it was a good place . I have one sad memory, I can tell you the area where I was sitting, I don't know who I was with 0r what I had gone to see, but I shall never forget the news item which showed the British army when they entered Belsen concentration camp
I agree with everybody. Wigan Council should hang their heads in shame for what they have done to the town centre.
I too agree with everyone. Look what the've left us in Market St., a goods ramp leading to empty stores.
To all the people that gave permission for this to be removed and a MONSTROSITY to be built....shame on you ! ! this is one of the worst things to happen to Wigan. I have lovely memories of Ritz and the surrounding area. How can loosing a street be justified ? ?
I think this is a long time before demolition. The Ritz looks like its open and was shut for many years before they knocked it down. Also John Menzies changed to WHS about 20 years ago.
2022, wanton demolition & destruction again because the council won't protect & preserve our Ancient & Loyal market town in keeping with the locals' wishes. Another mad scheme, this one on the site of the Galleries opened by Princess Diana 1991, 400+ apartments, another cinema and bowling alley, an ill-conceived monstrous waste of money, doomed to fail the town, I fear!
