My wife's mother, Mary Wheeler (born 1911). dressed in her finery, in Mesnes Park one Sunday in the early 1930s. The pavilion can just be seen at top right.
I think Irene will appreciate this.

Beautifully dressed - as if a guest at a royal house party of the Prince of Wales -wonder where Mrs Simpson is?

How right you are, Irene will be on here soon or I'm a Dutchman Arthur. Lovely photo. I read that some stonework around the pond came from the demolished Moot Hall. Anyone know anything about that?

Neil - I was told the foundations for the landscaping round the lake was masonry and rubble from the old town hall, which was demolished in 1882.
The park opened in the late 1870s, but the lake was only completed a few years later, which would coincide nicely with the town hall demolition date.

I remember that pond at the bottom of the steps.
If I remember rightly there used to be fish in it when I was a kid in the 1960's.

How well you know me, Arthur and Neil! As the song goes: "Isn't she lovely?". What a beautiful photo!

That is really interesting information about those stones. I never knew that, and what a good town council Wigan must have had then. No wasteage there...and the history in those stones!
