Spring Bank in Wigan is the rise that goes up from Union Bridge at Newtown to the Old Carnegie at Half Way House, Pemberton.
Ron this could have been taken at Lathom House, near Skelmersdale as it was a large remount depot for the cavalry in the First World War.
Looks like Lathom House in the background. I worked at Pilkington R and D Labs at Lathom and part of the stable block still remain.
My Great Great Grandad was a Driver in the Royal Field Artillery, I wonder if he is in this
Just had a good look with a mag glass, and it isn't a house they are large tents
Ron, Lathom House was the residence, and its grounds, Lathom
Park, was where the remount depot was within. A special railway line was built from Skelmersdale station into the Park to transport the horses.
Carol I was replying to Alan H who said he thought it was Lathom House in the background.
Just a reply to Alan H - in which department of Pilkington R & D did you work?
Margaret, the final department that I worked in was Windows Technology. Mike Jenkins was Group Head and Ray Cross was Departmental Head. I worked there from 1965 to 1993 when I took early retirement.
Alan, I worked in the Chemistry of Glassmaking under Harold Charnock and Phil Irlam. A long, long time ago.
Margaret, I remember both Harold and Phil, must have been at Lathom at the same time.
Well this is ancient but I worked at Lathom for only 4 months as an electrician in 1962, The pay was rubbish so left . But I was working in a lab room and in walked Harold Charnock ,he was El Supremo. "Hello Arthur how are you " I said not too bad whereupon he showed me round his experiments. Everybody was gobsmacked . I then explained Harold came from Crawford Village and myself from Pimbo Lane 2 miles apart and he had also been my Sunday School teacher. Magic!!
