I think the records show this was played on April 8th 1950 - Wigan winning by 26 points to 5. The team that day was Ryan, Ratcliffe, Cunliffe, Ashcroft, Nordgren, Mountford, Bradshaw, Gee, Egan, Slevin, Barton, Large, Blan, but apart from possibly Ratcliffe, nearest camera I'm struggling to recognise other Wigan faces - is that Ratcliffe?

Can you imagine the super leaguers today, playing on a pitch like this one.

Comment by: Maxine Williams on 19th February 2014 at 11:04

How can I find out who played for Salford at this game please, does anyone know?

Comment by: Josh on 19th February 2014 at 11:48

Is this Wigan? I somehow doubt it.

Comment by: AB on 19th February 2014 at 12:12

Kieth.yes it is Ratcliffe to me,His hair and bony knees and dare I say Clean shirt. The forward facing the camera looks like Frank Barton. What a pitch?

Comment by: Alan H on 19th February 2014 at 14:30

No, Josh, it's Salford. Caption says Salford v Wigan.

Comment by: Jim on 19th February 2014 at 20:21

The scrum has just broken up and the "Wigan" front row forward does not look anything like Gee, Egan or Slevin. Nor do I "recognise" the other 3 "Wigan" players on the left facing the camera. Could this be Oldham, Leigh, Halifax etc., I'd be very interested to see if anyone else can put names to these "Wigan" players - so far apart from one player having a resemblance to Ratcliffe no one has.

not even Wigans ground let alone Wigan playing!

Comment by: Garry on 20th February 2014 at 12:49

It says quite clearly it's SALFORD and not at WIGAN. Read before making all the wrong comments!

Comment by: JohnB on 20th February 2014 at 14:57

Garry and Allen H, people are talking about WIGAN, Salford is not even mentioned- people are trying to establish IF it's a WIGAN team not a Salford one - read the posts more carefully please before commenting.

i think this may be halifax with jack wilkinson running across to cover tackle

Comment by: JohnB on 20th February 2014 at 20:08

Very interesting shoulders, if it’s Jack Wilkinson he was a classmate of wrestler Shirley Crabtree ("Big Daddy"), and a Great Britain international Prop, who played at club level for Halifax, Wakefield Trinity and Bradford Northern. Became a publican after retirement and can be seen in a few scenes from “This Sporting Life” (1963) - the year he retired.

It states clearly SALFORD V WIGAN 1950...Look at the caption. Good hevens above.

Comment by: George on 21st February 2014 at 08:56

Looks as if it's Salford v Halifax and not Wigan as in caption.

Comment by: Whelley Wayne on 21st February 2014 at 10:41

dont think it's at Wigan Garry!

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 21st February 2014 at 13:57

RON HUNT; Where did this photo come from?
I think it`s not a Wigan team.

Comment by: Jarvo on 21st February 2014 at 18:46

Come on, Ron, it's clearly NOT Wiggin...Who is it?

Comment by: Alan on 28th February 2014 at 11:21

IT'S LEIGH!

Comment by: FredG on 28th February 2014 at 22:32

IF it's Leigh where is Charlie Pawsey, Harry Edden, Norman Harris, Jimmy Rowe, Peter Riley, Walt Tabern, Yendle Pugsley, Jack Wood, Ted Kerwick, Jimmy Ledgard, "Nebby" Cleworth etc., I don't see any of them but all of them played well over 20 games each for Leigh that season.

Comment by: FredG on 1st March 2014 at 12:29

Apologies may be in order. The "Leigh" player standing next to the Salford no.10 looks remarkably like Harry Edden who played nearly 200 games for Leigh but I still can't place the other "Leigh" players. If it was Leigh then this game took place at Salford on March 4th 1950 with Leigh losing 8 points to 4 before a crowd go 10,000.
