Ah..I know now where this, its William Fosters playing field. The railway to Ince Station is seen in the back groud.
I think that we are in fact looking approximately south east, back along the old trackbed of the GCR route into Wigan Central station, with a nice new path in the foreground courtesy of the MBC, who unfortunately once again in their haste, have destroyed another old bit of railway line!
Behind us just a short distance away would have been the railway canal crossing on a substantial girder bridge, and beyond the yellow painted railway bridge, which as Garry correctly says carries the LYR route from Wigan to Bolton and Manchester, would have been Manley St overbridge and immediately beyond that the station at Lower Ince.
Calderbanks the scrap metal chappies’ place was hard up against the LYR embankment just out of view to the right.
Also over to the right beyond the yellow bridge would have been the GCR Lower Ince shed, latterly Kwik Save, and now of course another ubiquitous housing estate.
I was fortunate enough to have walked and photographed this wanton destruction myself a little earlier than Terry in February 1983, before it disappeared completely for ever.
