Very interesting photograph. To the left of the picture, just behind the last coach, was the place we called 'down't nick'. This was the road that led from the top, near the Vic pub, and down past Middleton and Wood. At the top of the picture is the ex LNWR main line; here we spotted all the Semis , Brits and Jubs, etc, etc. In the platform at Wallgate looks like a black five probably going to Southport from Manchester. The Southport line can be seen under the bridge curving off to the right. Happy days.

Jarvo, I was wondering exactly where Middleton and Wood were located, was it in the building with the stained glass windows or where the Nissan hut ( that has just been torn down)and while I've got you do you recall the brick colour of the large building across the road from Uncle Joe's site, Was it associated with the co op dairy or something ?

Great picture. Just as I remember it.

Kevan: Middleton and Wood was almost at the bottom of the road that was the 'Nick'. It was opposite Wallgate's Southport and Liverpool platforms. It was the road that ran from the side entrance of the Vic; the bar that later became Bertram's Bar. I'm sorry I cannot help you with the building across from Uncle Joe's. Good luck with that marvellous layout; it really is superb.

Anyone noticed the timber top of a former LNWR signal box to the right of the photo?
It was used as a makeshift store/offices & minor workshop for the S&T linesman`s department.
