Ron I can't place this, what was the building at the end?
The building you can see directly in front, is on the corner of Woodcock St and Market street. There was a fruiterer's in the bottom part. I think it was Conroy's? Also a very high quality sweet shop, called Meesons, who also had a shop at the side of the Court Cinema I always remember they had superb window displays. There is another photograph on the site showing a view of the fruit stalls taken from the upstairs part of the building. After they demolished the old wooden stalls they build an arcade called Petticoat Lane. There are photographs in the PLaces. Market Street. section
Isnt that the parish church tower just to the right of the buildings, which would put that picture just opposite the Queens hall. ???
Aitch..you are spot on.
Thanks for that name Ron, I've been trying to remember the name of the toffee shop that was there. aitch, the tower is on the top of the bank at the top of Library Street.
Just out of shot to the left on Woodcock St was Alsteads the tailors.
Wher that pic was taken would be round about where Bob Silcocks fruit & veg stall was..
Cyril is it not the tower on top of the old Moot Hall Chambers building, next to the Black Horse? (see this pic) http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/photo.php?opt=5&id=1354&gallery=Market+Place%2C+Wigan&offset=0
It can't be the church tower though, that is further over to the right, obscured on this pic by roofline of The Crofters.
I think the toffee-shop was Meeson's.
You could well be right there Mick, to the right of that tower you can see what looks to be the church tower flagpole.
Perhaps one of the flagpoles that used to be on the gables of Lowes store Cyril?
It is the old Moot Hall tower in the distance, dismantled sometime in the late 60s and Meeson's was in the shop on the corner, used to love just gazing at their window displays!
