I think it's safe to say this chap's retired. He's probably remeniscing, thinking:
"Eee, thi don't mek um like thi use't'do!"
I think this could be my grandad,so thrilled to see this photo. My grandad was Peter Barnes
Yes it's our grandad Peter Barnes from Golborne Street Scholes, such a lovely quiet man, did'nt speak unless he had to, loved his pipe. He was married to Jane Barnes, he died around 1960. God Bless Him x
From the slope of the pavement I think this was " Mc Nulties"There was the Bluebell on the corner of Scoles crossing then Jimmy Liveseys tobacconistst thn Mc Nulties cloggers and then an Entry which you can see behind the man.
That entry which ran through to Jockey Terace I once saw used by a bobby to dispatch a trouble maker from the Fleece across the road He took him down there and only one came out.
Further to my previous comments, the Cloggers shop was,I think, Faircloughs ( McNulties was Library St) I know they actually lived in Appley Bridge .
My husband's family had a clog shop at 111 Scoles for generations, their surnane is Ince. They are mentioned in 1825 directory and in every census record after that.
