For old ordnance survey maps of the UK, you could do no worse than check this link out http://www.npemap.org.uk/
Simply enter a postcode on the front page and it takes you to a map of the area circa 1948. The amount of old railway round Wigan is truly astonishing. Not just 'mainline' but miles and miles of 'pit railway' too.
