The 1928 Rugby League Cup Final, at Central Park, Wigan. Result, Swinton 5 Warrington 3. This photo shows Hill Cottage (top right) which I believe was shown in the 1841 Census and I think still exists. It may have been the same property that the butcher Joe Hill lived in at the time the Wigan Club acquired the field to set up Central Park at the turn of last century. My understanding is that the field was referred to as Joe Hill's field and he grazed his cows there. Photo extracted from Pathe film and this explains the poor quality.

Apart from being listed in the 1841 Census, in the Wigan Directory of 1869, Hill Cottage was occupied by James Taylor, junior, engineer at "Water Heys"

The Edmundson family lived at Hill Cottage on the 1960 / 70's

I think they had 2 sons, youngest was Trevor, not sure about the older one.

The father was headmaster at Whelley Secondary Modern School.

The preoccupation with Hills Cottage has overlooked the fact that the 1928 RL Cup final was played at Wembley not Wigan. It was the first Wembley Final and the start of Wigan We3mbley record.

Hi Allan, I think you'll find it was the 1929 Cup Final that was the very first one played at Wembley, not 1928, when Wigan beat Dewsbury. This 1928 Final was the last one before Wembley was used for the venue and the Pathe newsreel which these pics are from confirm it and any Wigan fan can tell you this is Central Park, not Wembley but it is a Rugby League Cup Final.
