Lapel badges weren't my thing.... Although the collection predates my coming to Wigan, I will have driven through Wigan in some of the buses some of these came off before they went for scrap. Also, the Atkinson lorry front came off a scrapper in a yard which was somewhere near Kelbits works off Edge Green Lane, Golborne.

If the Atkinson radiator surround came from Edge Green, then there's an excellent chance that it came off one of Alf Sutton's wagons. Here's my reasoning. The land where Kelbit's bitumen plant was situated was formerly the site of Thomas Cromptons rolling mills. Sometime during the mid 60's, the entire site was purchased by J.W. Ratcliffe & Sons, Motor Vehicle Dealers and Dismantler's. Much of the site was rented out to various companies, Kelbit's being just one of them. When I worked for Bill Rac in the 70's, part of the site was set aside for breaking up old wagons, many of them being Sutton's old Mk 1 Atkis. Although they still had plenty of work left in them, Alf Sutton had an agreement with Bill Rac that none of them would be sold on to be used by other hauliers. So we had to cut them up. The tyres and rims had to be taken back to Sutton's yard, the engines, gearboxes and diffs, we took to Paul Sykes at Barnsley, the chassis we cut up and threw in the scrap skip and the cabs were torched. If you'd witnessed what we destroyed David, you'd have wept. I could be wrong of course, but I'm willing to wager that you obtained that radiator surround in about 1978/9 from a bloke by the name of John McKenna. Regards. Ozy.
P.S. Love the Albion badge.

The Albion Badge was located on the radiator grille. Brings back great memories of our six wheeler Albion Reivers.

REV,You have got a nice collection,The BIG A badge the
GARDNER 180 and the ATKI MK2 RAD badge the reason they put
fibreglass grills on the MK2 was because of the CUMMINS
engine requirements they had to put a pressurised radiator
and a header tank on as well not many people know this.D.C.

Derick the mk2 Atky had the same grill with Gardener and RR engines you know, not just Cummins.
What ever engine was fitted, this grill was on every mk2 Atky. The mk1 Atky was the full radiator no grill.
