I had my Hen-party at the Garrick. Bob Monkhouse was the 'turn'. Spent many Friday and Saturday nights there.

It was ok if you managed to get a view of the stage without it being obstructed by one of the roof supports.
Seen some good acts there, Grumbleweeds[all 5 of 'em] Syd &Eddie [Little and Large] Joe Dolan and Jackie Carlton to name a few.
I was doing cabaret work in the early 70's as part of a duo and we worked a week there with Manning as top of the bill.
Also worked Talk of the North in Eccles where Johnny Mansell compered. He lived in Wigan at the time.
Blighty's at Farnworth was the place to watch variety acts such as jugglers and strong arm acts

I saw Freddie Star, Sandie Shaw, PJ Proby and many more at the Garrick. Someone told me it burnt down in the 70's. I met my ex husband there in 1966 and in the 80's we went to have a look at the old place only to find a pile of rubble - HAPPY DAYS.

Loved the Garrick, there was a singer came there quite a lot in the early 60's but I can't remember his name, he was crippled and in a wheelchair, but what a voice, I have a feeling his last name was Stone or something like that.
Wonder where he is now.

I used to go regularly mid week. One of the lads at Case Tractors used to get free tickets and hand them out.Joe Dolan was on every year.I always tried to get on the little balcony as it was a decent view,i think there was only one pillar in your way from that angle.

I don't know whether to take that as a compliment or not.
On what do you base your assumption?

jermyb - your remark reminds me of some graffiti I saw in Liverpool (again in the mid 1960s)
It was near a church and the sign read something like "What would you do if Christ suddenly appeared" to which some 'wit' added "move St John to inside right and let Jesus play centre-forward"

Perhaps I should explain for our 'younger' posters - Ian St John was the regular centre-forward for Liverpool in the 1960s.

First post on WW, but I went to the Garrick in the early 1970,s and saw Jerry Lee Lewis,Freddy Starr,Bob Monkhouse and a lot of top rate british and american artists.
At that time as Mark said Roy had the night off on tuesday and Johnny Goon Tweed took over and he was funny, but the real star was Roy Hastings every night because they played all week.
I thought that both he and John Martin at the Riverside were good to listen to ,but they were different clubs and I thought the Garrick was better and Roy was the best compere/singer I have seen.
People of our age who were lucky enough to go to Blightys,Copperfields,Talk of the North, and the numerous nightclubs or entertainment clubs would definitely have got better value than you would get today.

Veteran,
The Garrick entrance was at the back of the pub on the corner of The Avenue and I think Leigh Rd.Was the Paramount where the civic hall was?

Fossil I know were you are with the Garrick.

The Paramount was on the other side of the road from the civic hall, do you remember the station were the trafic lights are to turn into the civic hall (used to be a yankee base at one time in the 50s) well the Paramount was just a bit further down on the same side as the station, it looked like a little wooden hut. They used to get a lot of polish men going in the Paramount, I think they all worked in the coal mines.
