Can anyone put me in touch with Joan Hitchen who attended UGS 1959 -1963, trained to be a nurse and then a midwife. Her parents had Hitchen's butchers shop in Orrell. I expect she is married but don't know married name. Also looking for Geoffrey (Jeffrey)? Crooke who attended UGS in same period. I think he came from the Shevington or Standish area.

How did you find wiganworld?
By chance, looking for information on Highfield School
Comments
I found it quite emotional looking at old class photos. I didn't recognise myself and had to check the identification given by Sandra and Barbara. I found the photos of the demolition of the old building very upsetting. It held so many memories and now it's gone. I have always felt privileged to have attended Highfield school, I think it was exceptional. I'd dearly love to know what happened to members of my class. Mavis Calderbank I always looked up to. I haven't seen her since 1966 when I lived back on Enfield Street for a short time. I know she trained as a teacher and have been told she later re-trained as a speech therapist. After training as a teacher myself I did return to work in Wigan but haven't lived there since 1971.

Anthony, I,m a Higham,I have been researching my family tree, I concentrated at the start on the male line, I was surprised at the number of Highams in Wigan and close district, post 1700,s and even earlier, I have wondered about the origins of the name and I have noticed Highams in the S East, even a place named HIGHAM, S East I thought maybe Scandanavian
any info would be appreciated.

I wasn't going to use ' Guestbook' again for a general comment after reading the last few items. I do agree that it isn't the right place to air your views but I've had a look at Forum & don't really like it..looks like its for locals only. So I'll just carry on looking at the great photos people upload of faces & places......unless someone can up with something new for people to want to comment but don't want to get involved with Forum.

I actually found the forum to be very cliquey, if you have an opinion that certain folk dont like you get banned from the forum.
Certain folk get free run on the site whilst others are kept quiet......

All you folks who are looking for info would be better off on the Wigan world Forums section, there are loads of us proper Wiganers on there ready to help you with your requests.
This part of Wiganworld is really just a "guestbook" for folks to say how the like the site. So come on and join us 'know it all's' on the Forums section , you would be surprised how many folk have got back in contact with each other through just asking,
