No, you obviously failed to understand the question.Let me rephrase it to make it easier for you. Why would they mention that in an advert for hot cross buns?
Replied: 2nd Apr 2012 at 21:11
If the advert was written by a pseudo-Wiganer it would mentioned twice!

If the advert was written by a wigan obsessed yicker it would have a word missing

Read fact number 17, in this very sites collection of untruthes,
Collection of what?
Wigan has many things, but I don't know about 'untruthes'.
I bet you can get them from Snellens Market and easy parking to boot.

You don't see fictitious stories being published by St.Helens Council simply to gain credibility for the place. Wigan Council are noted for doing just that.
They employ people, ie: Jenny Broadbent, Collections Officer (?), Museum of Wigan Life, to do nothing else but publicise rubbish about Wigan which simply isn't true.
Like you say, Wigan has many things. But Marks and Spencer being formed in Wigan isn't one of them, I'm afraid!
Neither is Trencherfield Mill the biggest steam engine in the World.
Nor was Pretoria Pit Explosion a Wigan colliery disaster.
Nor were the members of The Verve 'from Wigan'. Or Kym Marsh. Or Peter Kane. Or Joe Gormley.
etc.

Who's 'we'?
If you're referring to Beecham, he 'discovered' Beecham's pills in Oxfordshire, long before he ever set foot in Wigan. He didn't even discover them in St.Helens, where his main production factory was set up.

The actor Sir Ian McKellen grew up in the town in a house opposite Mesnes Park andfirst saw Shakespeare at Wigan Little Theatre.
Never knew Shakespeare had been to WLT!

Is anyone else other than me absolutely Peed off with this guy TONKER. Every topic he has to hijack with his childish "Not Wigan" etc. rantings. Believe me I have on numerous occasions been on the point of making this guy HISTORY as far as this site is concerned

Gas was invented in Wigan.
I think I read something about it on the National Gas Museum site.

I imagine Tonker to be similar to the Character, 'Only me',
Or one of the 'Old gits'
Funny enough, but not a Neighbour I would wish for.

wiganyankeeron,
Just put him on ignore if you don't like his posts. There are plenty more need to be made into HISTORY before him. He never uses bad language or has posts deleted. Is he wrong what he says? Is the trencherfield Mill the largest steam engine in the world etc.???

Broady, the site would be less if he weren't on it, that's for sure. He does swear though, if you look hard enough, you will find one of his 'informative posters'.

I for one, like the cut of his jib
Replied: 4th Apr 2012 at 14:30
broady, he is wrong in what he says, because he hijacks practically every topic he can, with his constant moaning about the location of Wigan in relation to the rest of the area.

A young lad (probably still at school) made a couple of posts on here in early 2010.
He seemed interested in local history, which is to be applauded and encouraged. Thing was, he described himself as a 'Local Historian'.
He posted some spurious information and got short shrift from folk.
In short, he was shot down. Unfortunate, but he was put right. I hope the youngster's appetite for local history was not dampened and he learned to get his facts straight before speaking/typing with authority.
But more importantly, I hope another Tonker was not created.

Wiganyankeeron, you're wrong. I'm not wrong in what I say. If I was wrong in what I said, I wouldn't have said it!
What I do is point out that the local rumours are not correct.
ie: Trencherfield mill steam Engine is not the biggest steam engine in the World. I feel it's wrong to teach primary school children that it is.
ie: Marks and Spencer company was not founded in Wigan.
ie: Hulton Collieries Pretoria disaster did not happen in Wigan and it was not a part of Wigan life.
etc. (and there's many)
Indeed, the location of Wigan, in relation to the rest of the area, is where it always has been. The problem arises when people don't actually know where that location is.
Wigan, the town, has been there since the eleventh century. The Metropolitan Borough of Wigan has only been there since 1974, and people need to understand the difference!
