You don't see fictitious stories being published by St.Helens Council simply to gain credibility for the place. Wigan Council are noted for doing just that.
They employ people, ie: Jenny Broadbent, Collections Officer (?), Museum of Wigan Life, to do nothing else but publicise rubbish about Wigan which simply isn't true.

Like you say, Wigan has many things. But Marks and Spencer being formed in Wigan isn't one of them, I'm afraid!

Neither is Trencherfield Mill the biggest steam engine in the World.

Nor was Pretoria Pit Explosion a Wigan colliery disaster.

Nor were the members of The Verve 'from Wigan'. Or Kym Marsh. Or Peter Kane. Or Joe Gormley.
