You obviously didn't watch it.
It's an old tradition, that a woman who has given birth, is unclean until the church has cleansed her of her "sin".(churched)
So, on the first time she leaves her home, she should be cleansed,(churched) thus giving her the right to move back into society.ie: Visit other homes/places, after the birth of her child.

I watched it but i wasnt listening to it properly. I know when I had my first son, my mum said I had to be churched.
I won't tell you what I said!!

It showed how much has been lost through "progress" though. The one thing that shone out in the programme was the sense of community.

I'm sure it relates back to the Original Sin of Adam and Eve. And wasn't it only in the Catholic religion?
Know I wasn't churched as I was receiving instruction into RC, so I couldn't be done.

It probably was maggie, the catholics have some very odd ideas!!

I had many a heated debate with my mum over having my kids christened, she said if they werent christened they'd go to limbo if they died, which I said was totally unfair cos that was punishing the child for the mistakes of its parents!!

But I did have em christened eventually

debbie, had the same conversation with my paternal grandmother after the birth of my first daughter
on my first visit afet the birth she said to me
if you havent been churched you cant come in here,
wondered what the heck she meant, she explained
upshot was ,i said.. see you some other place then . she wasnt a religiuos person nor from a religious background so she must have been doing that to carry on a tradition
not with me she werent, wasnt religious then and aint now
although i did bow down to pressure and had my first christened. my 2nd and 3rd werent, by that time i had my own beliefs and stood by them rather than be brow beaten into summat i didnt want nor did my children need

Nothing "odd" about our ideas debs! they either scare the bejaysus outa ya and you never sin again, and end up a priest or nun or you grow up too be a normal well adjusted guilt ridden person, who are slightly better than "proddy moprags"who are all sinners!lol Amen.

funny they never insisted on churching men after they'd done their bit!! I suppose the priests wouldve had their work cut out for em if that happened!! lol

I remember the local priest coming round our estate every week or so. He always had a pocket full of quality street to give to us kids to make us go out and play so he could terrorise our mums into taking us to church

When I was at college I went along to the Student Catholic Club with a Catholic friend. I am CofE, but apart from my friend noone else was aware of that. I was v shocked when a priest jokingly told off someone by saying he'd send a Protestant to give them their Last Rites.
"proddy moprags" indeed! xrh59

Debbie, Art - you've shocked a good CofE girl!

Ha, ha, xrh59 - lucky for me my eldest is learning Latin at school (The Deanery in Wigan).
Now where's the best bingo hall, with the best winnings?!

Some CofE churches still have a bit of Latin in their services - St. Mary's, Ince, did when I went to a christening there about 5 years ago.

Happily things have moved on. In the last few years of walking days in Ince, Ince Parish (CofE), St. William's (RC) and Ince Methodist's all walked together in the processions.

There still is a Churches Together Christmas service - this year it's on *Sunday, 9th Dec at 3pm at St. William's Church* if anyone is interested.

When one of my grans was young she used to cross over the road away from St. William's RC church on her way to Ince parish church (Christ Church).
Must've been because of them Bulldogs xrh59!

Hello jamse
In our experience of The Deanery so far (up to Y8) we have no complaints.
