I suffer as well and have done for years.Although i worked in a noisy engineering environment all my life,i never tried to claim for it.I have hearing aids now and that cancels out the tinnitus but only while you are wearing them unfortunately.

The tunnellers at Parkside in the early 60s will be in a bad way, there were 7 big air drills going at the same time,we only went in to check their machines were safe to use,Wimpy had their own fitters,we tried to go when the drilling had stopped, because the noise when drilling was going on was horrendous, and no ear protection in those days.

I've suffered tinnitus for many years, probably like many others in industry didn't give a thought to ear plugs or defenders (head phones).
I did look into it, my doctor sent me of an MRI which revealed very little, eventually diagnosed "non-specific" in other words nothing to find (except for a big void between my ears lol), an MRI is worth doing just in case a small growth is developing internally behind the ear which is pressing on the nerve, that can be successfully dealt with.
One suggestion was to have the nerve from my ear surgically cut, this I regarded as too drastic as it doesn't alway work then you are stuck with no hearing but still the tinnitus racket going on.
I'd rather retain what hearing I have than have a non-reversible procedure done.
I have tried certain medications but none have worked, I occasionally get a quieter day but they are few and far between, I do feel sorry for anyone with this curse as at its worst it is very dibilitating and does destroy concentration at times.
At least I can sleep at night but some poor folk have it 24/7/365 and have to take a sedative at night to sleep, that must be horrendous

I have tinnitus, and find it very hard to concentrate at times .I notice it more in the evenings when I am watching tv etc . I notice it seems to affect me when sat quiet. When I try to read a book ,sometimes finding it helpful to have quiet music on in the background.
I don't seem to get a full nights sleep for the last month or more, and I put it down to tinnitus as I wake up with it.
Can any wigan worlder tell me does it get worse with age ?

My husband was compensated for industrial deafness several years ago,but I think it was the AEU that handled this.
His deafness has been progressively getting worse and our GP referred him for has now got.He also suffers from tinitus and has recently had an MRI scan and is awaiting the results.
It is worthwhile trying for compensation but more important is to have your hearing looked at and improved.

I have had this for many years. it has become worse since the Menieres disease affected my remaining ear. I now have 1 noise in my right ear & usually 2 in my left one. the only way I can overcome it is by ignoring it. I have lost my ability to hear music which used to help a lot. Sorry to be such a miserable old biddy.

your not being miserable I knew a few people who suffered with tinnitis in the mines and they had to get a job on the surface rather than putting themselves or workmates in danger.

I feel sorry for anyone with the full tinnitus,I got a bad
cold some years ago..went deaf but recovered my hearing,I was left with a sound of a gas tap in my head..but the strange
thing is now my hearing is so acute I hear every little noise
but it doesn't stop me sleeping and as I said you all have my sympathy.

I have suffered with tinnitus for 20 years or so and I just ignore it now. I wear a hearing aid but is doesn't affect the tinnitus. I got mine I'm sure from working in the sump tunnel at Parkside when the horizons were being cut There were 4 air fans going 24/7 and we, as deputies had to be there for the whole shift. There were no ear defenders those days. I was sent for a hearing test by the union COSA and was compensated with £4,000, less a fee to the union

Hi Maggie, very interesting to read your comments. I, too, suffer from Menieres disease. I've had loads of treatment over the last 4 years. I don't have the bad attacks now but there's a gradual loss of hearing. I think this is normal.
Menieres disease was first identified by Prosper Meniere in Angers, France and as we all know Angers is Wigan's Twin Town.

it is very comforting to read that other people also know what it is to have Menieres & the resulting impediments. I have never met anyone since I went to the AGM of the Menieres society many years ago. I could not travel there now, my balance is so bad.

I can see it being a big problem for more in the future, the noise from disco's and some car radios is louder than where I worked, and ear muffs had to worn there.

Tinnitus is not always caused by working living etc in a loud environment. How do I know because I have had it for the last 30+ years, Went into Wigan infirmary for routine stapedectomy in 1982 came out with total hearing loss in right ear along with tinnitus. Was later diagnosed with hereditary deafness which continued to take away most of what was left of my good ear.. both ears knackered both ears with 24/7 tinnitus who do I claim off God ?

If the operation caused the tinnitus...wigan infirmary...probably too late i think its 5 years for negligence claims

Tried lipo flaviniod, no effect whatsoever doesn't mean to say it won't work for someone else but if it was successful I'm sure they would have cornered the market by now and made lots of money!
I believe it was based on vitamin E hoping to improve inner ear circulation but if it's at the other end at brain connection it won't work.

Buy some and have a go, if it works for 1 in 100 then that person will be hell of a lot better for it.
