Millgate and Scholes

Millgate and Scholes
From approximately the same spot 56 years on from Frank Orrell’s picture 'Looking down Millgate with the new Scholes developing in 1968' recently posted on Wigan Album - View by Recently Commented.
It's quite a contrast.

Probably it was not only the new roads that cut people off from neigbours & friends but having to move from a terraced house in a street where everybody knew everybody into a tower block.
The trees in the foreground mask one of the highrise flats..
Good pics of then & now

I still prefer the old Scholes it was safer. It’s like dicing with death when crossing the roads - from a country bumpkin’s view.

I much prefer Frank's 1960s photo, it has that zip.
