Wigan has changed dramatically over the years. The town centre and the roads around it are completely different from what they were a few years ago. The Central Park Rugby Stadium has gone, replaced by a Tesco supermarket.
Some of the older and larger impressive buildings have retained their originality - however, their uses have changed.
Amazingly, there were 1,000 pit shafts within five miles of the town centre (in the late 1800s) - There are no collieries left today, Bickershaw Colliery was the last to close in 1992.
