Haigh HallWigan has changed dramatically over the years. The town centre and the roads around it are completely different from what they were a few years ago. The Central Park Rugby Stadium has gone, replaced by a Tesco supermarket.

Some of the older and larger impressive buildings have retained their originality - however, their uses have changed.Wigan Pier

Amazingly, there were 1,000 pit shafts within five miles of the town centre (in the late 1800s) - There are no collieries left today, Bickershaw Colliery was the last to close in 1992.

For more information and pictures please select an area from the left. If there are pictures of a place you would like included, email me and I will see what I can do.

Roman Dig, Millgate

Not a lot is known about Roman Wigan, although it is believed to be a settlement known from Roman literature as Coccium. Theses fascinating photos strengthen that belief.
