Amazing how that expanse of green has been kept free of the developers Dennis. I assume that there is some kind of covenant on the land.
Quite refreshing to see when you arrive in Aspull to see such a wide open space.

Who needs a front garden with well kept grass areas to look out at.Never been a lover of stepping out of the front door straight onto the footpath but sometimes it works

Comment by: Aspuller on 17th January 2024 at 07:04

One of the best and most photographed places in Wigan.

Comment by: Alan on 17th January 2024 at 07:53

I drive past here everyday, and believe me it looks picturesque with snow on the ground.

Always a pleasure to see photos of Aspull; such a nice area. I remember The Running Horses Pub along that row.....that's some years ago! I think it's a private house now. Soon be crocus and daffodil time along the grass verges.

I can imagine many years to come if that pathetic labour get in power all that open space will have social housing on i am afraid folks that will happen in due course people need to wake up and think what aspull will be like in many years.

Lovely photo Dennis.
My Daffodils and Crocuses are now poking through the soil, great. Can't wait for Spring.
Snow on the ground does look great but after a day or two I've had enough. I've plenty sherry and coal, what more do I want.

It looks so very clean and tidy, and it’s also Elizabeth’s favourite part of Wigan.

Old Ron, RIP, never had good words to say about Aspull when was chatting to him
He always complained about the noisy non stop traffic, litter and the hooligans.

Comment by: Elizabeth on 17th January 2024 at 09:38

My favourite area of all the Wigan outlying districts, always lifts the spirits. There are apartments now where the Running Horses pub was situated.

Comment by: Sue on 17th January 2024 at 09:43

There's hooligans everywhere, some more than other sort after areas.

Comment by: Veronica on 17th January 2024 at 09:50

A lovely peaceful scene, it would be nice to see it under snow. The only village I know with anything like a village green.
(Another so obvious ‘cooked up’ pseudonym I see….)

Let's keep this site politics free PLEASE!!
Let's just call down a plague on ALL their houses and leave it at that.

Comment by: Malc on 17th January 2024 at 10:04

Yes snow on the ground looks nice over a large area like this.
Very nice photo.

I can imagine if labour get in, having to build social housing because pathetic Thatchers mob sold off all the council houses!

Another great photo Dennis,my wedding reception was held at the Running Horses in 67 and always remember being able to post a letter or card at the post office without getting out of the car and brings back good memories of working at Harvey’s Red Seal, Cale Lane on the old plant.

Dennis, sorry to change the subject entirely.
I have quite a few old maps of Wigan but this link provided be Sir Bob in yesterdays PAD I found to full of so much information and detail I could not stop looking at it so I thought I would share it with all. Honestly you will never need another source of reference.

Thanks Dennis and thanks Sir Bob.

Yes there’s quite a few sought after areas around Wigan unfortunately the town centre itself isn’t one of them. And from what I understand hooligans hang out after hours in the town centre kicking cans up and down Standishgate. They also demolish the empty pubs….is that a case of
‘ turning a blind eye’ ?

You all should be proud of living in aspull , but not many amenities.
After saying that, the small shops their ok.

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 17th January 2024 at 14:27

Dave Johnson, I bought one of the houses that Thatcher put up for sale. So I thought it was a good idea.
