Does anyone remember Ron Sillitoe who was Head of this school in the 1950's. A member of Hindley Operatic Society with wife Dilys. Lovely couple.

Remember Ste well what a decent man,we got our papers of Ste when living at Dukes Row,Crawford Street and School Close cheers Dennis good to see your back.

Comment by: Gary on 20th December 2023 at 08:51

Dennis, it is the house I was born to in 1951.
Mum and Dad sold it to Ste and Maggie in 1955. The school was used in 1949 for my parents' wedding reception
Thanks for this one.

That road is a nightmare for drivers, 5mph from Bolton to Wigan. Sometimes stopped in the traffic jam.

Comment by: Ex Speed Cop on 20th December 2023 at 09:32

Arthur if everybody drove at the correct speed for the road conditions there would be no jams.

Comment by: Veronica on 20th December 2023 at 10:50

I’ve missed going down that way to Wigan since the bus was taken off. I don’t know how the residents cope with no transport.

Comment by: John(Westhoughton) on 20th December 2023 at 11:12

Dennis is the house with a moat still at the rear of what was St Elizabeth’s school? There was a man who played the electric organ at the pub facing the school and he attracted people from all over and kept the place busy busy I think his name was Stuart but could be wrong.

My Mum's old school Dennis , she was born 1930 , lived at Landlords Farm, Dicconson Lane as a little girl, good to see it still being used , instead of being demolished.
Remember Ste delivering the papers in his little white mini van, he was always dashing about lol, your David and me ,used to buy sweets off him when he stop in ,St David's Crescent .
Nice photo Dennis.

Yes John , its called Gidlow Hall.

Comment by: Mark on 20th December 2023 at 13:28

Veronica that's why there's traffic congestion more people are using cars.

Comment by: Malc on 20th December 2023 at 13:30

Ex speed cop how can you drive at the same speed when everyone stuck in traffic....STOPPED.
Ever heard of junctions and the volumes of cars, vans and lorries on our road trying to get home at peak times.

Comment by: Veronica on 20th December 2023 at 14:38

You are right of course Mark I’ve never see it congested at all when there was a bus running. Although it would be after 10 00 in the morning when I caught it. I thought the bus service might have been re-instated with the Bee Network buses. It’s a very long road for the residents if they have to walk to the shops near the Finger Post. Not everyone owns a car especially the elderly. I suppose they have to rely on relatives. It’s not good enough there was always a bus service for folk in that area. It was the 715 from Bolton if remember.

John it was ‘Phil’ the organist. There used to be some really good singers in the Hare &Hounds. Went in there in the mid 80’s. It was a very popular pub.

Comment by: John(Westhoughton) on 20th December 2023 at 15:06

Cheers Ex Speed Cop I new Nigel who bought the place maybe 25 years ago by the way you couldn’t have known Robin Spencer (speed twin)or the notorious Robbo from many moons ago and did you drive a 2500 PI or was that before your time haha.

Comment by: John(Westhoughton) on 20th December 2023 at 15:22

Of coarse Veronica,I think Phil moved on to the Mercury on the A6 but not sure but he was in demand I would think cause he was that good.

Comment by: Julie on 20th December 2023 at 15:36

Comment by: Anna on 20th December 2023 at 16:47

No,it's really not Julie,we love it.

Comment by: Elizabeth on 20th December 2023 at 18:01

Yes Veronica,I agree about the lack of public transport along Bolton Road,I too don't know how the people, especially the elderly, manage.

Comment by: . Ozy . on 20th December 2023 at 18:32

Newsflash for drivers stuck in holdups on Bolton road …
Northern Rail provide a twice hourly service between Bolton and Wiggin , ( when ASLEF or the other mob aren’t kicking off that is ) , at the not unreasonable price of £3.40 off-peak ,
or a tenner a year for holders of a TFGM travel pass .
So why not leave Betsy in the garage , let the train take the strain , and make space for all those polluting lurrys , attempting to make vital deliveries of Brussel sprouts and Bailey’s Irish cream liqueur to the retail outlets at this most crucial period in the year’s calendar .

Talk about selfish .

Comment by: Veronica on 20th December 2023 at 20:17

Yes you’re right John. But as you know the immigrants are in there now.

Comment by: Alan on 20th December 2023 at 20:35

Just drive when it's quiet. No problem then.

Comment by: . Ozy . on 20th December 2023 at 21:01

Don’t tell us where the immigrants are Veronica, tell us where they aren’t … it’ll take less time that way .

Comment by: . Ozy . on 20th December 2023 at 21:46

Yeah , that’s fine Alan , but who wants to drive to Bolton at three o’clock in the morning ?

More to the point , who wants to drive to Bolton anyway ? … or Wiggin either for that matter .

Give it just another ten or twenty years and nobody’s driving anywhere .

I take it you’re familiar with the term
“ saturation point “ ?

Comment by: John(Westhoughton) on 20th December 2023 at 22:06

Veronica I believe Jez is on at the Mercury this Friday and ITVX were filming there earlier this year so maybe the migrants moved to Killey Court.Pity it was such a good night in there maybe 7 years ago when Quez and her husband ran it with such good singers like Harry Forshaw a good friend of mine but I believe it’s £20 a ticket instead of £1 to enter now.

Comment by: Veronica on 21st December 2023 at 09:17

I won’t be there John.. LOL ! I must admit the Hare & Hounds was the best ever back in the day.

Comment by: John(Westhoughton) on 21st December 2023 at 12:35

I certainly won’t be there Veronica either ……LOL I’d sooner go for a bike ride with friends Malc, and Paul who runs the bike shop in Platt Bridge ,2 genuine fellas, looking like Boxing Day before we get out on bikes.

Comment by: Veronica on 21st December 2023 at 14:22

I don’t blame you John cycling will do you more good. I do miss the good singers though. Johnny Ball was good with his” Johnny B Good” and ‘ By the Time I get to Phoenix, She’ll be rising…….” Good days back then. There were others as well…
