One of the bosses lived next door to us, he came from America.

That's a lovely photo. I can almost feel the coolness of the air. I love dusk. We have a bat that swoops and swirls over our back-yard at dusk almost every evening; I call him Wally Batty and it is a joy to just stand and watch him.

Just shows how high up Haigh is ..I have to confess I don’t buy beans from there anymore - they don’t taste the same. The last tin of beans I bought was so bad I rang up Customer Service and told them how vile they tasted! They sent me some vouchers which I didn’t expect…needless to say I didn’t use them for cans of beans. Great photo Dennis.

Be yee ready for bommie neet
there’s timber ripe for picking ,
as dusk shall fall and dark dost dwell,
young sprouts will sharpen their nicking .
Forget yee now thy normal walk ,
when nights close in be ready ,
for the smell be guy ,
and the sparks will fly
and a child’s eyes will sing once more ..

Now the dark comes quickly in ,
The lights are on at half past four ,
And every window a lighthouse
Guiding the traveller home .

Car lamps sweep along the lanes ,
Searching for the glinting gems
Of cat's eyes like two drops of rain ,
To steer them round the bends .

For the clock has stolen away our light ,
And we need help to find a way ,
Now suddenly become partially sighted ,
We only see for half the day .

Heinz beans the best from a tin, buy from the cheap low budget shops and the tomatoes sauce looks like blood.

Comment by: Bramwell on 23rd October 2023 at 20:14

It's the other way around S+B, Heinz products have gone to pot, with Aldi beans being far superior.

Comment by: Beans and sausage on 23rd October 2023 at 20:33

Heinz beans the worst I've ever had from a tin. Bar none. They are overpriced and overrated tasteless crap. Buy the cheap low budget brands and add your own sauce to your taste. The beans are just that. Beans.

We can see the area around Walthew House Lane from our landing window and it's surprising just how bright those lights are around there at night. Though with lorries having their trailers loaded with products at the Heinz warehouse throughout the night there'll be a need for having bright lighting there. Though I can remember when there was only one dimly lit lamp post along there, and that was near the brick works, otherwise it was pitch black, and the bulb in this lamp was often getting broken by someone throwing or catapulting stones or shooting pellets at it from guns.

Correct Beans and Sausage , ….Heinz’ products are certainly overrated and most definitely overpriced …

This is just my opinion by the way …

Similar to Kellogg’s products in fact .

Both companies originating in the U.S, or were , or are still very good companies to work for , should one be fortunate enough to secure employment therein that is , as both companies pay , or at least did pay very good wages , and still do , relatively , although it must be remembered that these wages are reflected in the price of their products .

But times constantly change .

Beans are just beans , just as corn is merely corn .

Spuds are spuds , etc . etc . ad infinitum . cauliflower , broccoli , onion , carrot , etc will always be what they are.

Wages may get better , or they may get worse , but beans will always remain beans .

Fortunately , and for the time being at least , there now exists several alternative options to HJ Heinz’ 57 varieties of nutritional preserved foodstuffs .

From memory , the first Netto , Aldi or Lidl store that I ever encountered
, appeared in the early 70s .
( the first Netto store that I ever came across was situated in Golborne incidentally)

Someone will no doubt disagree as to the exact date ….
This much is inevitable I suppose .

These pioneering stores had pallets of stuff just dumped onto the floor ,… if you want it , grab it , take it to the checkout , pay for it , then just bugger off , … no frills …

And it seems the Teutonic approach has prevailed , as most of the major players nowadays appear to have adopted the Lidl or Aldi approach as the industry standard for pricing ,… judging by their price matched Aldi labels at least .

It may seem apparent that I have the greatest respect for the methodic and logical Germanic approach to life’s challenges , and I’m prepared to plead guilty to that charge .

However , my heart still bleeds for those poor overpaid employees of Heinz and Kellogg’s , … , it truly does , but speaking from the point of view of an underpaid wagon driver , having delivered the basic products to both companies for decades , and for a pittance it must be said , … my response to their predicament in today’s market can be encapsulated within two words…..

“ Tough Titty ! “.

I’ve often thought the cheaper ( better) brands are made by the same manufacturer ( Not Heinz obviously!) . I personally buy Sainsbury’s and M&S but my all time favourites were HP beans. The Heinz beans taste as if they have just been dug up from the earth! That was the reason I rang to complain , thinking they were a bad lot. Other food stuff is ok but as you say Ozy expensive. People have to shop around because of the over inflated prices in today’s climate.

Comment by: DTease on 24th October 2023 at 10:02

People complain about the effect that cow discharges are having on climate change, well, what about the effect that millions of tins of Heinz baked beans are having?
The poor old cows don’t do anything but wander around a field chewing grass and minding their own business and yet they keep getting blamed for all the human discharges brought about by the effects of baked beans.
Fair play for the cows I say!
The winds of change must blow in favour of the backfiring cow!

Comment by: Veronica on 24th October 2023 at 10:18

Yes I sympathise with those poor cows. They break wind and a there’s a big stink in more ways than one. Blaming those poor cows for climate change! But it was always the same Dtease in families the big question always was …
” ugh!
Who’s done that …open that back door!” ….

Comment by: Garry on 24th October 2023 at 11:04

HP beans the best in my Opinion.
Toast done with a fork on my coal-fire, covered in HP beans and a bottle of sherry, a great supper treat while watching TV.

Comment by: DTease on 24th October 2023 at 11:37

Yes Veronica, and it always ended up with the poor old dog getting the blame. I’m sure that the windiest households only kept a dog on standby for that very reason.

Comment by: Veronica on 24th October 2023 at 12:20

And don’t forget all the horse manure left in the cart road as well…horses were just as bad! Nobody bothered about climate change then and the smoking chimneys. We are where we are because of all that. Stand up for the poor dumb cows who- don’t forget supply us with their lovely creamy milk for ‘us’ teas and coffees! Cows have rights! Vote for Cows in the next election!

Comment by: Alan on 24th October 2023 at 14:31

Has Garry rightfully says its all about Opinions. Eat what you feel taste right.
I prefer Heinz beans and never had a problem with the product.

Comment by: John Noakes on 25th October 2023 at 22:27

Heinz Beans? Yuck.
Heinz Beans with some tomato sauce added? Better.
But, what's the point in buying Heinz Beans?
Asda Beans with some tomato sauce added are the Heinz Beans that we used to know.

Comment by: Veronica on 26th October 2023 at 14:04

I agree John Noaks.
Why had sauce to Heinz what’s all that about? You would be paying twice as much. I think someone has been on the sauce already!
