Work Continues

Work Continues
Work continuing at Crooke bridge. Although the contractors working on the refurbishment of the footpath are well on their way through Appley Bridge by now, work back at Crooke is carrying on. It looks as if considerable reconstruction was required to provide a link up to the bridge at a grade suitable for wheelchair users. The raised embankment - for which aggregate is being unloaded from the hopper - has narrowed the through path under the bridge. The surface there is being constructed in concrete - presumably to ensure a smooth, safe passage for bikes and wheelchairs. Incidentally, I saw a wheelchair user making their way along the new track towards Gathurst - which would have been impassable for them prior to these works.

The bank as now been seeded with grass seed and covered over to help it get growing.
They are still busy with a section near to the Shevington swing bridges because they've had to do some piling work where the tow path had eroded, then they will have to take up all the cobbles at Dean locks and relay them.
Its not being concreted Rev, they dug it out and filled it with large gravel, then a smaller gravel, then tar mac, and finally a top coat of fine gravel.
All the loose gravel top coat will be swept off once its bedded in.
Appley bridge to Parbold section will be starting in November by a different contractor.

This is fantastic for anyone who likes to get away from the built up areas.
It is fully accessible for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, plans and cycles.
I believe the funding has come from Andy Burnhams Mayoral funding, Wigan Council and the Canal and River Trust.
Over to West Lancs Council now to extend the route from Appley Bridge to Parbold.

Nice to see they have thought about the less abled amongst us. I hope some of the poorly designed barriers ( to stop motorbikes) are replaced along the towpaths and not only make them wheelchair friendly but made long enough not only long enough for a wheelchair but also a person who if pushing the wheelchair to manoeuvre through the barriers

All the gates are being removed except those in the Roughest sections of the canal, which means those from Ince up to the top lock.

Peterp, I wish the Police would stop off road motor bikes and scooters on the roads, even riding without lights and safety helmets.
Many motorist and pedestrians have been hit by these idiots who have not respect for others. They don't have insurance or other legal documents.
So my point is if they ride illegal on the roads, I rind it very hard to stop them on the canals and old railway tracks that are now beautiful walkways like the Whelley railway line.
Where is our Police to protect us.

I think the police need help from the locals who know who the illegal motorbike riders are.
Stop moaning and grass them up and the law will then confiscate the bikes and crush them.

A quad bike over took everyone on the road at Lower Ince two days ago, no helmet no lights and very noisy. They aswell as bikers are a nuisance to all people who respect the law. I doubt very much if they'll respect canals, they'll probably dump them in the canal when they've finished with them.

Yes it’s looking good David I did a ride 2week back from Warrington Sankey Valley trail to Parbold and the fine gravel as Mick says they are finishing of with is making it even better as you can hear bikes coming without creating any rolling resistance, pity it’s not continuous to Liverpool or opposite way to Leeds.By the way that Samkey Valley Trail is good.

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 19th August 2023 at 13:35

John, yes the Sankey Valley trail is great.

Mr Noddy...how are you supposed to know who they are when they ride past you at speed.

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 19th August 2023 at 16:36

I think, whats Noddy, saying, is you will know who they are, if they live near, you.

Noddy at 11:19.....the Police need evidence not someone's word.

if PC Plod does take these scramblers and scooters from them it isn't any big deal, they will just buy new ones with the money they have gotten from selling or delivering recreational drugs, younger folks use these instead of going to the pub.
