What`s all the fuss about being first to comment?
You`ve got the ladies with the trousers again Tom !!

Comment by Alan H on 13th May 2012 at 00:05

Comment by Ken R on 13th May 2012 at 00:33
Nice photo, must be early, not many shoppers about.

Comment by Gem on 13th May 2012 at 00:36

How old is this canopy though, Tom? It was removed before demolition, but when was it installed? Is it the same as that on photo 15309 on bottom of page 4 under Market Hall in Places, in Album ? Photo 3652 at bottom of page 3 is interesting but isn`t "real". Found a grand slide show http://photopeach.com/album/ml6b19
of Wigan old and new, but can`t see canopy !!

Went into the Market Hall yesterday. What a shock, many empty stalls and it looks like it is on it's last legs.

Comment by Mac on 13th May 2012 at 12:24

Tom, copy and paste the website on to your browser, or put `wigan old market hall` on Google and on page 3 click on `Wigan Old and New on PhotoPeach`.

Comment by Ernest Pyke on 13th May 2012 at 17:10
wigan3, there`s only one lady that you can`t see if she is wearing trousers or not ! There were also seven ladies in Tom`s photo of 7th May !!

"original entrance canopy from the old market hall"

Fantastic, Thomas. I walked under that canopy hundreds of times in the early sixties when I worked at McAvoys butchers in the old market hall.

Thank you for the memories...!!

Comment by Garry on 13th May 2012 at 18:09
Wigan3 you need to go to specsavers, there's nine in the shot.

Comment by wigan3 on 13th May 2012 at 18:36
Garry, I stand corrected and am on my way for a new prescription.

Comment by wigan3 on 13th May 2012 at 18:39
Just had another look, the person in the Card Factory door way could be a man...

When I left high scool 10 years ago this place used to be buzzing and packed! I used to buy all my clothes from the sports stall in the picture. Same with the galleries - it used to be the place to go on a saturday!

Anybody know what day the picture was taken? The council need to do more to get these places filled. Cheaper rates , cheaper parking etc

Comment by Thomas Walsh on 13th May 2012 at 19:49
Jonathan, the photograph was taken on Monday the 30th. April ,at aprox. 1-30pm .
You make a very good point regarding the need do something to increase trade.

Comment by warrior on 13th May 2012 at 22:29
Fred I buy meat from McAvoys regularly but I bet they didn't sell when you were there what they sell today such as Zebra steaks.

Comment by bob on 14th May 2012 at 07:14

Comment by Ernest Pyke on 14th May 2012 at 12:03

Comment by Pat Kelly on 15th June 2012 at 23:08
I did not know that it was the original canopy, its a pity you don't walk into the old market hall and all its stalls memories we wish all we have now is eating places of some sort and why I don't know how people have the money to eat in them.
