Ince Wagon Works

Started by: wiganyankeeron (inactive)

Just had an e.mail from someone who is hoping to write a book about Ince Wagon Works. Has anyone any photos of the place? I know there are a couple on the site. So if you have put them on, can he use them in his book? Have you any more? Or if anyone worked there have you any documents etc. relating to the works? I'm sure anything would be of interest.
You can e.mail me ron@wiganworld.co.uk

There is a site MAILINATOR where you can get a temporary e.mail address, Just make up a name ***** @mailinator.com You can then go to the site and check you inbox. Very useful if you need a reply or need to register for something and don't want to give your proper e.mail address out.

I started work in Ince Wagon and Steel works down Christopher street in 1954, working as a dresser on axle boxes and number plates, sadly after a few months I finished up with an hernia, and so that put paid to that job, years later I went back to the Central Wagon Works down Patricroft road, which at that time was doing wagon repairs. When DR Beeching started to close the railways, Central Wagon turned to buying the locos, wagons and coaches and burning them up for scrap, it later started trading under the name of Thompsons, and was later relocated to Christopher street again here it traded till iT was bought out by a firm called Booker who wasted no time in closing the place down, I dont have any photos, except a couple which I got out of a book about Ince, and a as records documentation I dont have any of that either, so sorry I cant be of any help in that way.

However this guy is looking to write a book about the time they were scrapping engines.

My grandad worked at the Iron works during WWII, I guess it was a necessary industry, as an aside he was in the St John Ambulance too, there are a couple of books, Images of Wigan or somesuch like in which there are photos of him as he sent copies into the WEP, years ago....I guess many folk did volunteering services alongside the industry they had to work in. After my mum was born in '51 he then became a publican in places like the Bridgewater and Black Diamond.....I will see if I can find some of his pictuers from work and scan them

Just googled 'Ince Wagon Works' as my Grandad is Eugene Sharples and asked me to look for some photos of the old wagons he used to work on.

Its his 75th birthday on Friday and we've ordered a book for him on it. If anyone has any old photos or used to work with him please get in touch.

Thanks

Rebecca
