Leeds Liverpool Canal Society - Friends of Kennet (Facebook):

Kennet will be going through the Wigan Flight:
Sunday 9th July: Wigan Top Lock to Wigan Dry Dock starting at 8am
Tuesday 18th July: Starting at 8am to the top of Wigan Flight

On 1st July, the society celebrated its 20th Birthday and Kennet celebrated 70 years afloat.

It's one of the River Class of Leeds & Liverpool short boats - all named after rivers, such as the Kennet. They were built pre-WW2. Post-WW2 boats were in the Town Class - named after towns, like Bacup, Farnworth, etc.

George's Journey

George is one of the last remaining wooden horse-drawn ‘short’ boats from the Leeds and Liverpool canal, rescued by museum volunteers in 1973. This is her story... Link

George is now a Canal & River Trust HLF outreach boat for primary schools + community groups. Delivered by the National Waterways Museum.

Free to all pupils and staff, George will be travelling from Leigh to Liverpool in the
summer term and early autumn term - Info

Kennet was nearing the dry dock at the bottom of the flight when I saw her yesterday (11.15am).



She'll go back up the flight Mon 17th - Tue 18th Jul, mooring partway along overnight.

Kennet was moored near Britannia Bridge this morning for school children to go onboard.

She's moving on to Rose Bridge later today to finish travelling up the Flight early tomorrow morning.
